Grundies, And How A TV Producer Ended Up In People’s Pants

Imagine being a television producer and discovering that your name has become Australian slang for underpants. That is essentially what happened to Reg Grundy. Grundies is Australian rhyming slang for underpants, derived from the name of Australian television producer and media mogul Reg Grundy.

Meaning

Grundies means underpants or underwear. It is informal and distinctly Australian in flavour.

Example

“Where are my grundies?”

“I need to change me grundies.”

Australia Japan Connection

Is “Dag” Strine’s Most Versatile Word? Few English words can be a compliment, an insult, and a description of something stuck to a sheep’s backside all at once. Welcome to Strine’s “dag.” A dag has three related meanings in Strine: (1) a character or amusing eccentric — often said with affection; (2) a socially awkward, uncool person, usually a teenager; (3) literally, a lump of dung-matted wool hanging from a sheep’s rear end. The insult sense almost certainly comes from the third, least glamorous meaning. Example “He wore socks with sandals to the wedding. What an absolute dag.” He’s such a…

Yobbo

Funnel Web Spider

Australia is known for its deadly fauna and despite fierce competition from lawyers, politicians, mining magnates, fish and chip shop operators, just scraping in as the most venomous of all of Australia’s creepy crawlies is the funnel web spider. Perhaps not surprisingly, this tiny spider is found mostly in and around Sydney, Australia’s self-professed Sin City. Though it only grows to a maximum of 5 cm, its venom is potentially fatal, though no funnel web spider bite has killed anyone since 1981, when an anti-venom was developed.

  • What Do Aussies Mean By “What’s That Got To Do With The Price Of Fish?”

Have you ever been talking to someone who suddenly changes the subject completely? Imagine you’re chatting with an Aussie friend about cricket. “Australia’s batting looks strong this year.” Your mate replies, “My neighbour bought a new lawnmower.” You stop for a moment, wondering what that has to do with cricket. An older Aussie might grin and say: “What’s that got to do with the price of fish?” They’re not asking about seafood. They’re really saying, “What does that have to do with what we’re talking about?” ……え? そんなとき、年配のAussieなら笑いながら、 “What’s that got to do with the price of fish?” Expression What’s that got to…
