Paws For A Moment To Enjoy The Beauty

Not much is happening because too much mundanity is happening, but our garden is blessing us with glorious sights every day even as the dreaded summer heat sets in. Our kangaroo paws are providing particular joy at the moment.

I’m a bit worried about how the hot summer will affect the garden. The past two summers have been long and blisteringly hot with barely any semblance of a rainy season.

This year, May was a washout, but we are hitting the high 30s daily now. And the forecast is for much of the same over the next couple of weeks.

And the grevillea are continuing their amazing blooms.

Cop A Gander At These Rippers Too...

  • Slice of Heaven

Kangaeroo Corner, the name I give to our garden even though it’s not a corner but close enough anyway (which kinda sums up my life) is a little slice of Godzone for me. Gardening had never entered my radar until Mrs. Kangaeroo and the amazing Alex Endo presented us with an Aussie native plant garden just over two years ago. And while much of my life has entered something of a downward spiral since that time, the garden has been a little sliver of great joy. It’s really ironic as mum and dad were avid gardeners and dad even did it professionally. Of course, I never took enough interest to…

  • Hoodwinked

As suspected, our cvompany has pulled a shifty on us. Instead of being given the conditions wewere hired on and guaranteed when our division was “transferred” to a mysterious subsidiary, we are now back at our old employer on drastically reduced terms. And we have essentially been told to take it or leave it. In the middle of a pandemic lockdown, there isn’t really much other choice, especially at my age and with my background. It has not been a pleasant time.

    豪キャブラリー: Suss out

    オージー英語では、物事を調べてみたり、見てみたりするような事を、直訳すると「思っている疑問を検証しよう」という堅苦しい表現を使う。「大らかなオージーにちょっと似合わないだろう」と思う人が少なくないと思う。その通り。Check out my suspicions、要は「思っている疑問を検証しよう」から省略し、砕けた言い方に変わりsuss outという形になった訳だ。典型的なオージー英語である。

    豪キャブラリー:Saveloy

  • Be Careful What You Wish For…

One of the highlights of Kangaeroo Corner is the Fountain of Strewth, which I placed with the hope of attracting birds to the garden, but the role has been served so well, I’m now drawn to the idiom used in the headline (which stems from a passage of Aesop’s fables that says “We would often be sorry if our wishes were gratified,” according to Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations Sixteenth Edition and as I learned today). Sweltering heat and fierce sunshine has made the Fountain of Strewth a popular part of the neighborhood’s avian residents. And I’ve been delighted by this, sitting in the living room and watching as the birds have enjoyed…
