Venerable Kangaroo Bakery Jumps At Its Chances

Kangaroo is a small, and well-liked bakery in Kawasaki that has been operating for 38 years and has grown more recently to include a cafe, gallery space and architectural office, all in the same building called House Kangaroo.

Kangaroo bakes natural yeast, organic flour breads, and sells weekend-only loaves and sandwiches, but also accepts reservations for bread as its products frequently sell out fast.

Adjacent to Kangaroo is roo cafe, which opens only on Fridays and Saturdays, selling an array of beverages and treats.

In the same building is roo space, which is a rentable gallery and pop-up space area used for exhibitions, shows and workshops.

Architectural firm On is located on the third floor of the same building, and has a fun photo essay of how it spruced up House Kangaroo back in 2017.

Why the operation adopted the kangaroo monicker remains a mystery. There is a great sign outside the building featuring a kangaroo, which also takes a prominent position in the website used by the firm. But that’s it….no other kangaroo references or apparent connection to Australia (apart from having hosted a workshop for dry flowers that used wattle and other Australian plants, but that looks more coincidental than intentional).

‘I won’t have to do Q&A again’: PM spoofs end of the world

View Larger Map

Campbelltown Forest of Wild Birds A Slice of Oz in Sleepy Saitama

Koshigaya, located some 30 kilometers from downtown Tokyo, and Campbelltown, which is situated about 50 kilometers from Sydney’s central business district, were almost made for each other, even if only serving as satellite cities for their respective countries’ largest cities. Koshigaya and Campbelltown are sister cities and it’s hard to see a better example of the custom than the relationship between the Japanese bed town and its Aussie sibling. Koshigaya is also home to a picturesque corner of Australia, complete with wallabies, emus and some lovely wild birds, including rainbow lorikeets, superb parrots, Major Mitchell’s cockatoos, tawny frogmouths and kookaburras. The Campbelltown Forest of Wild Birds in Koshigaya could arguably…

Australia is, in a way, flavor of the month of sorts in Japan at the moment. That exalted status is thanks to the humble TimTam. TimTam biscuits are now sold in just about all of Japan’s ubiquitous convenience stores and most station kiosks in the capital and surrounding prefectures. TimTam biscuits were first made in Australia in 1963. They are comprised of two biscuits sandwich cream filling and covered entirely in chocolate. They have become a symbol of Australia. However, ownership of Arnott’s Biscuits Holdings, the company that produces TimTams, has fallen into the hands of Campbell Soup, an American company. This…

Did You Know A Japanese Cure Turned Out To Be A QR Aussies Use Daily?

Aussies scan QR codes countless times every day—for café menus, concert tickets, parking and payments. Yet few realise the technology was invented in Japan by one engineer who wanted to make work easier. Meet the man behind the square In 1994, Japanese engineer Masahiro Hara developed the QR code while working for Denso Wave. The company needed a faster way to track vehicle components during manufacturing. Hara’s solution could store far more information than ordinary barcodes while remaining quick to scan. A gift, not a monopoly Although Denso Wave patented the technology, it chose not to enforce the patent rights. This allowed QR codes…
