Bogan culture generates an astonishing amount of linguistic creativity. The fact that Australians can keep attaching suffixes to bogan is itself linguistically interesting. Researchers describe the word as unusually productive in Australian English. And then there is bogan pronunciation. The stereotype exaggerates features of Australian English: fishing → fishin’going → goin’mate → maaate The dropping of final consonants, broad vowels, swearing and exaggerated informality become part of the performance of bogan identity.
Aussies can buy an (almost) authentic Japanese castle for only about $100,000, it has been revealed recently on social media. Century21 Japan is selling the 6-story castle (with a restaurant on the second floor) in Akabira, Hokkaido, at a price unimaginable to potential home buyers Down Under. Of course, at that price, there’s bound to be a few catches, but perhaps not as many as some may think, especially considering it comes with a huge garden (over 5,000 m2), a working elevator, restaurant, more than 40 parking spaces and connection to sewage and water mains. Located in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island and home to the cashed-up bogan paradise of Niseko,…
Australia is exhibiting at the recently opened Expo Osaka 2025, and it got me thinking about the difference between now and the last time Japan’s second city held the world’s fair in 1970. Back 55 years ago, Japan was keen on showing to the world its miraculous recovery from the devastation wrought on it in World War II and Australia was keen on pushing itself as an advanced economy basking in glorious sunshine while surrounded by sunny beaches. Taro Okamoto‘s sculpture, The Tower of the Sun, was a symbol of the Expo and the Australian pavilion was widely praised for its architecture influenced by Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave Off…
そのほかに職場内に使用禁止として狩れた言葉はdarling(ダーリン)、sweetheart(愛する人)とhoney(かわいい人)だった。
