Alky is the Strine term used to describe an alcoholic. Back in the olden days, this would have been quite an acceptable term, but nowadays, someone with an alcohol dependence would probably be described as having substance abuse disorder.

Alkyというストラインはアルコール依存症者を示す。Alkyは古語であり、昔はどの場面でも使えたが今では恐らくsubstance abuse disorderにかかっている方と言われるだろう。Alkyは恐らく軽蔑である、使うことは勧めない。

    泥酔Big Kangarooが人々を歓迎するようになった

    カンガルーはオーストラリアそのもののシンボルでありながら考えRoo.comの象徴でもあるため、今回の「Big Things」は南オーストラリア州のビッグ・カンガルーを紹介したいと思う。 　ビッグ・カンガルーは南オーストラリア州と西オーストラリア州の境界村であるボーダー・ビレッジに設置され、高さ5メートルもあり缶を片手に持っている。オーストラリアが1987年にアメリカス・カップのヨット・レースを開催する前にボーダーの町おこしの一環として1986年に作られた。 　珍しく、ビッグ・カンガルーもニックネームがあり、ルーイ２世だという。ルーイ１世は、元々手に持った缶がビール缶だったため、村に対して与える印象が酔っ払いと近すぎるじゃないか、という恐れがあった。そのため、作り変えてジュースの缶に変えたとともに新しい名前も与えられた。 大きな地図で見る

    Given that this site started with the intent of spreading information about Japan and Australia and matters related to these countries, including languages, and then how much focus I have placed on gardening over the past couple of years, it’s surprising that I haven’t had much to say about bonsai.     豪キャブラリー： Shutyergob

    厳しい世の中ではおとなしくしていると損する場合があるが、喋りすぎても良くないことも招くことがある。多くの国々同様、オーストラリアでも恰好を付ける人々はあまり高く評価されず、そういう人たちが何か話そうとすると「shutyergob」と言われる可能性が高いだろう。Shutyergobは、実をいうと、shut your gobの「融合言葉」だ。Shutは閉じるでしょう。そしてyourは当然「あなたの」。また、Gobは口なので、直訳すると日本語ではこの豪キャブラリーが「口を閉じろ！」という意味だ。

    オーストラリアは猛毒生物の宝庫として知られているが、弁護士、政治家、鉱山王、フィッシュ＆チップス屋の連中という強力なライバルを押しのけて、最凶の座をかろうじて勝ち取っているのが「ジョウゴグモ(funnel web spider)」だ。 そして驚くべきことに、このちっこいクモが主に生息しているのは、シドニー：昔から “Sin City（罪の街）” と呼ばれてきた街の周辺である。 Australia is known for its deadly fauna and despite fierce competition from lawyers, politicians, mining magnates, fish and chip shop operators, just scraping in as the most venomous of all of Australia’s creepy crawlies is the funnel web spider. Perhaps not surprisingly, this tiny spider is found mostly in and around Sydney, Australia’s self-professed Sin City. 体長はせいぜい5センチほどだが、毒は潜在的に致命的。ただし1981年に抗毒素が開発されて以来、ファンネルウェブスパイダーの咬傷で亡くなった人は一人もいない。 Though it only grows to a maximum of 5 cm, its venom is potentially fatal, though no funnel web spider bite has killed anyone since 1981, when an anti-venom was developed.

    豪キャブラリー： Pissed

    オーストラリアの飲酒文化が深く、近所でバーベキューを頻繁に開き、日本などに比べて娯楽施設が少ないので、暇があると酒を飲む人が少なくなくpissedとなる場合が多い。他の英語圏の国ではpissedは主に「怒る」と言う意味だが、オージー英語ではその意味の上にもっとよく使われているのは「泥酔状態」を示すとしての言葉だ。考えてみれば、泥酔状態だと怒りが共通となる場合が多い。ところで、ノンべは、pissheadとも言う。ちなみに、pissedは、不敬な言葉なので、使うに気を付けましょう。

    Twitと言えば多分ほとんどの人がそのマイクロブログTwitterを浮上するだろうが、オージー英語ではtwitは昔からおちょこちょいことをやった人に対して軽く叱る言葉である。言われたら嬉しくなることはないがそれほど強いインパクトがあるような言葉ではない。
