オーストラリアではbarbieは儀式に近いほど豪州文化に根付いている。そして、そのbarbecueに欠かせない存在なのがsnagである。他の英語圏ではsnagは出っ張っている木の根のことだが、オージー英語ではソーセージのことだ。ソーセージは、また、mystery bagとも言われる。これはsnagの押韻俗語であるが、中身に何が入っているかわからない、というミステリーの意味のニュアンスもある。

Cleaning up my PC over the weekend, I got a great reminder of misspent hours more than a decade ago, when I found loads of vintage posters touting the wonders of Australia. Strine-speaking Shiori Kutsuna has been declared the 2012 Natto Queen, an award handed out to celebrities who promote fermented soybeans, or natto, as they’re known in Japanese. Kutsuna, a 19-year-old Sydney-born actress, was presented with her award at a ceremony in Tokyo earlier this week. Natto are a popular dish, particularly in eastern Japan, and are highly valued for their nutritional content and health benefits. Less widely praised are the gooey, sticky texture of the fermented beans. Kutsuna was born in Sydney and spent her formative years in Australia’s biggest city, learning how to speak fluent Strine. Ronnie Biggs and the Great Train Robbery were pretty well-known among my generation of Australians growing up, and recognition of the famous long-term fugitive was enough in Japan for his 2014 death to be widely reported. What is less established, however, is that both Japan and Australia have a much closer connection to the crook than many in either country know.
