Where Will You Go If You See A Dingo?

Stretch a fence from the Queensland coast to the cliffs of South Australia and you have the Dingo Fence. At roughly 5,600 kilometers, one of the longest structures ever built by humans, longer than the distance from Tokyo to Jakarta. Its entire job is to keep one animal out: the dingo.

What’s a dingo?

The dingo (Canis familiaris, sometimes classified separately) is Australia’s wild dog, believed to have arrived with seafarers from Asia around 3,500–5,000 years ago. It is now the continent’s largest land predator, feared by sheep farmers and protected as a native species in national parks at the same time.

Example

“Keep the gate shut — we’ve had a dingo prowling round the sheep yard all week.”

Japanese wildlife documentaries have long been fascinated by the dingo as one of the world’s few “return to the wild” domestic dog stories; a dog that went feral and re-evolved into something closer to a wolf. It is a favourite subject for Japanese zoology students studying canine evolution, and several Japanese zoos have hosted dingo exhibits explaining this rare biological journey.

  • Kangaroos Played a Part in Germans Being Big in South America BEFORE World War II

Postwar South America became somewhat notorious as a haven for Germans fleeing the defeat of the Third Reich in World War II, but some Teutonic types had already made it big in Argentina before the Nazis…and kangaroos had something to do with it, albeit an extremely minor role. Kangaroos served as an advertising figure for Sarrasani, a world-famous German circus between the wars. Sarrasani was formed in the German city of Dresden in 1901 by Hans Stosch, a clown with the stage name Giovanni Sarrasani. The circus was best-known for its elephants, but also employed lots of “exotic” peoples such as Japanese, Javanese and Sioux Native Americans, as well as…

Littlies

    Japan and the ANZACs

Japan is one of the many forgotten contributors to ANZAC Day, a day that has assumed legendary status in Australia and New Zealand. ANZAC Day commemorates the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915. Thousands of young men would be cut down in their prime during the vain campaign that ended in an embarassing defeat at the hands of the Ottomon Empire forces, but Gallipoli has since become a hallowed reminder of people’s willingness to commit their lives for their country. The ANZACs, diggers from the Australia New Zealand Army Corps, are now almost deified in an Australia where nationalism has come into vogue…

Snag A Democracy Sausage Before The Nutjobs Strip Voting Rights

Aussie voters in Tokyo will be able to snag a democracy sausage if they go to the Australian Embassy in Tokyo from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 2, according to the Embassy website. This be an opportunity to exercise a hard-fought right to vote (or avoid being fined for not doing so because votng is compulsory). And it also presents an extremely rare instance of being able to see consular officials helping Australians and earning some of the cost of the world’s most expensive passports, ensuring the documents are not a complete rort. Australia is one of the few countries that make voting mandatory, which I believe…

    Big Things
