Why Is A Strine Sponger Not A Good Pickup?

Every workplace, every share house, every family gathering has one: the person who never quite pays their share, never quite pulls their weight, and always seems to be there right when the food comes out. Aussies have a word for them: sponger.
Meaning
A sponger is someone who lives off other people’s generosity–money, food, a couch to crash on –without ever giving anything back. The image is a kitchen sponge: soaking everything up, contributing nothing.
Example
“Don’t invite Dave to the barbie. He’s a total sponger, never brings a snag or a coldie.”
Did You Know?
The word traces back to British English, but Australians adopted it early and gave it a distinctly local target: the mate who always finds an excuse to skip the round at the pub. In a culture built on “shouting” your mates a drink, refusing to ever shout back is close to a social sin.
Japan has giri (義理), its own version of social pressure around reciprocity. The sense of social obligation to return a favour. A sponger is, in a sense, someone who has completely opted out of giri. Japanese readers familiar with the discomfort of an unreciprocated favour will recognise exactly why Australians find spongers so irritating.
Everyone likes a mate who shares. Nobody likes a mate who only shares in one direction. Fair go, as they say, and that means both ways.
