Australia Meets Japan: Art, Music, Wine And An Aussie-Kiwi Catch-Up

Aug. 21 – Early September, 2026

Ron Mueck Keeps Staring Back

Australia’s Ron Mueck is still looming large at the Mori Art Museum. His astonishingly realistic figures and wild shifts in scale make this much more than a stroll around a gallery — it’s an encounter with the strange business of being human. The exhibition runs until September 23, so there’s still plenty of time to get along and have a good look.

Pub Choir: An Australian Singing Lesson Disguised as a Gig

Pub Choir takes one of Australia’s favourite social activities — singing with other people — and turns it into a full-blown show. At the Tokyo date, the promise is simple: learn one song in three-part harmony and sing it together. That’s the whole deal, and possibly all the excuse you need for a night out in Shibuya.

Official website: Pub Choir — Asia Tour Dates

Ticket information: Tickets are on sale online through the official event ticket channels. The Japanese promoter lists e+, Ticket Pia and Lawson Ticket as the participating playguides; web sales only.

Opening hours: Doors 18:00; show starts 19:00 on September 24.

Venue: Shibuya WWW X, RISE Building 2F, 13-17 Udagawa-cho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150-0042.

Admission: ¥8,500, all standing, plus a separate one-drink charge.

Booking: Online ticket purchase is required. The event is strictly 18+; photo identification is required if age verification is requested. No refunds are provided except in cases of postponement or cancellation.

Suggested image: A packed Pub Choir audience singing together, preferably showing the communal rather than conventional concert atmosphere.

South Australian Wine Soirée — Aoyama

South Australia’s wine country comes to Aoyama in September, with winemakers themselves in town following the Wine Australia Japan Roadshow. The evening combines premium South Australian wines, a light buffet and the chance to hear directly from the people behind the labels — a rather more interesting proposition than simply standing around pointing at bottles.

Official website: ANZCCJ Events

Ticket information: ANZCCJ registration.

Opening hours: 18:30–20:30.

Venue: APÉRO AOYAMA Winebar & Table, 3-8-5 The City Minami Aoyama Fiore Bdg 2F, Minato-ku, Tokyo 107-0062.

And if you’re heading west, the same South Australian wine experience lands in Kyoto two days later. Noku Kyoto hosts the winemakers, wine and light buffet on September 11. For anyone already planning a Kyoto trip, it’s a very agreeable Australian detour.

NOTE FROM 考えRoo

A few useful details have now been checked against current event and venue information. In particular, Pub Choir’s Tokyo performance is confirmed for September 24 at WWW X, with doors at 18:00, a 19:00 start and tickets at ¥8,500 plus a drink charge. It is an 18+ event.

The ANZCCJ events are also confirmed: the Kiwi Aussie Mixer is September 3, the Aoyama South Australian Wine Soirée is September 9, and the Kyoto soirée is September 11.

As always, check the official event page before booking. Dates, prices, availability and access details can change — and 考えRoo would rather send readers to the right source than send them marching confidently in the wrong direction.

    Sheer Nonsense? No, Shear Delight!

Australia hasn’t really had much of an impact on Japanese culture over the years, but there is one case that inspires sheer delight….or perhaps that should be “shear?” For Japanese of a certain age, 調子をそろえて、クリック、クリック、クリック (Choshi wo soroete kurikku, kurikku, kurikku, is a highly familiar song picked up in an early season of Minna no Uta, a radio and TV program broadcast by NHK since 1961 to introduce new tunes to the Japanese public. The song is known in English as Click Go the Shears and Peggy Hayama, who sang the Japanese version of the song with lyrics written by Takashi Otowa, would retain a lifelong connection with Australia because…

Have A Very Merry Mad Max Xmas!

It was with great delight that I learned overnight that Christmas in Japan in 2025 will have a tinge of Aussie about it. And my enthusiasm was in no way quelled by the fact that this merely meant a screening of Mad Max. With a message of “Merry Mad Max,” National broadcaster NHK‘s Premium Cinema channel will celebrate the festive season with a screening of the Aussie classic propelled to worldwide success on the back of becoming a hit in Japan when it was released here in 1979. Mad Max is Australia’s most successful film franchise and Japan played a huge role in it becoming that way, as we have…
