ボーガン以前のボーガン

ボーガンという現象は、突然ポンッと現れたわけじゃない。オーストラリアには昔から、 larrikin（いたずら好きの破天荒キャラ）、 ocker（ザ・オージーな粗野キャラ）、 そして各地に散らばる“ちょっとガサツなオーストラリア男性像”が存在していた。つまり、ボーガンはその長い系譜の最新バージョンみたいなもの。「ボーガン」という言葉が全国区になる前は、地域ごとに別の呼び名があった。

やがて“ボーガン”がこれらのローカルな呼び名を飲み込み、全国共通の言葉として定着した。ここがポイントで、 ボーガンは単なる階級ラベルじゃない。もっと言えば、 「オーストラリア的な“ある種のセンス”を語るための言葉」になった。ファッション、趣味、ライフスタイル、価値観—— そういう“文化的な味付け”を説明するための便利な言葉として進化したわけだ。

    Gangnam Bogan Style! K-Pop大ヒットの豪ダサイ風パロディ版が注目を浴びている

    今、韓国K-PopアーティストＰＳＹの「江南スタイル」が世界中に大ヒットが、数多くのパロディ版も発表され、その中オージーのダサイ文化を称える「ボーガン」風のMelbourne Styleが注目を浴びている。 K-Pop artist PSY may have scored a massive global hit with his catchy Gangnam Style, but he’s also inspired plenty of parodies, including Gangnam – Melbourne Style!, a version that celebrates Australia’s bogan culture of the unfashionable. ちなみに、元の「江南スタイル」がこうだ。 Incidentally, the original Gangnam Style is here. 　ビデオの独特なダンスがヒットの原因一つとしているが、日本のネット社会では日本のカー用品販売「イエローハットＣＭのパックリだ」という声も上がっている。そのビデオがここにある。どう思う？ The dance mimicking a lasso-wielding horse-rider in Gangnam Style is often cited as a source of the hit’s success, but some among Japan’s Net community say PSY has ripped off moves from an ad produced here years ago by Yellow Cab, a car accessories seller.     In Strine, a flannie is a shirt made out of a wool-like material called flannelette. The flannie, sometimes also called a flanno, is an iconic item of clothing in Australia, often viewed as part of the bogan uniform. ストライン（オージー英語）では、「flannie」とは、フランネルというウールのような素材で作られたシャツのことを指します。「flannie」は「flanno」とも呼ばれることがあり、オーストラリアを代表する衣類の一つであり、しばしば「bogan」の定番スタイルの一部と見なされています。 The flannel can also be used to refer to a wash cloth.     Australia’s tourism boom in Japan has produced a new stereotype of the Australian tourist in Japan. Some Australian commentary has started jokingly referring to this phenomenon as the boganisation of Japan. The background is real: Australian arrivals to Japan surged after the pandemic, helped by Australia’s proximity to Japan, favourable exchange rates and Japan’s enormous appeal as a destination. One 2025 report noted that Australian visitors to Japan reached 637,300 between January and September 2024, up 42% on the equivalent record period in 2019.     Music As A Bogan Cultural Element

    Bogan culture has an extremely strong musical component. The canonical soundtrack includes: And here we encounter another great paradox. Some music associated with bogan culture is highly sophisticated musically and enormously influential internationally. AC/DC, for example, isn’t culturally insignificant because bogans love them. Quite the opposite. The music becomes part of a national mythology. Triple J even held a National Bogan Day in 2002, celebrating the stereotype with music including Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Rose Tattoo and AC/DC. So “bogan music” isn’t necessarily bad music. It is music that has become culturally associated with unpretentious Australian masculinity and working-class authenticity.
