A crafty emu has shocked Shiga residents by strutting the streets this week.
Residents of Moriyama, Shiga Prefecture were treated to an unusual sight early this week when police received a report at 6:45 a.m. of “an ostrich walking around.”
今週、滋賀県守山市で早朝から珍しい騒動が起きました。 午前6時45分ごろ、警察に「ダチョウが歩いている」との通報が入り、住民の間でも驚きの声が広がりました。
Officers confirmed the sighting around 7:00 a.m. on Sept. 23, watching the giant bird stroll casually toward JR Moriyama Station as locals snapped photos and shared updates online.
警察官が確認したところ、巨大な鳥はJR守山駅方面へゆっくりと歩いていき、周囲の住民が写真や動画を撮影する姿も見られました。
It wasn’t an ostrich at all — it was an emu, the second‑largest bird species in the world and a close Australian cousin of the ostrich.
しかし、この鳥はダチョウではなく、オーストラリア原産の大型鳥 エミュー でした。
The emu had escaped from the home of a mobile zoo operator, who kept it alongside an American ostrich. Although the gate had been locked, the bird managed to slip out and begin its suburban adventure.
エミューは、移動動物園を営む男性の自宅から脱走したもので、敷地の門は施錠されていたにもかかわらず、何らかの方法で抜け出したとみられています。
After nearly two hours of wandering, police surrounded the emu inside the grounds of a local apartment complex at 8:40 a.m., where a handler safely captured it.
その後、午前8時40分ごろ、近くの集合住宅敷地内で警察が包囲し、飼育担当者が無事に捕獲しました。
The zoo operator told MBS News they were “surprised,” noting that nothing like this had ever happened before.
飼育者は「こんなことは初めてで驚いている」とコメントしています。
The incident quickly spread across social media, with MBS News sharing video footage of the emu’s stroll through Moriyama.
