Kangas And Koalas Take Center Stage As Kanagawa Zoo Celebrates Marsupial Milestone
1986年から40年、オーストラリアの仲間たちを祝う
1986年10月25日、金沢動物園に初めてコアラとオオカンガルーがやって来ました。2026年は、その来園から40周年です。金沢動物園では、コアラの日でもある10月25日を中心に、10月13日から12月27日までさまざまな記念企画を開催します。
Forty years ago, on Oct. 25, 1986, the first koalas and eastern grey kangaroos arrived at Kanazawa Zoo. In 2026, the zoo is celebrating their 40th anniversary with a series of special events running from Oct. 13 through Dec. 27, centred around Oct. 25, which is Koala Day in Japan.
まだ申し込める企画：ユーカリウォーター蒸留体験会
9月27日現在、まだ申し込める40周年企画は2つあります。そのひとつが、10月17日に開催される「ユーカリウォーター蒸留体験会」です。コアラのエサとして栽培しているユーカリを使い、ユーカリウォーターを蒸留します。アロマ＆ハーバルスクールkukunaの髙橋久美子さんが講師を務めます。定員は15人、参加費は2,000円です。参加費は当日受付で現金で支払います。
As of Sep. 27, two of the anniversary activities are still accepting applications. The first is a eucalyptus-water distillation workshop on Oct. 17. Participants will use eucalyptus grown as food for the zoo’s koalas to make eucalyptus water, with Kumiko Takahashi of Aroma & Herbal School Kukuna as instructor. There are 15 places and the participation fee is ¥2,000, payable in cash at the event reception.

Participants should bring scissors or pruning shears and work gloves. The workshop runs from 10 a.m. to noon at the second-floor workshop room of Nonohana-kan in Kanazawa Nature Park.
まだ申し込める企画：たたき染め体験会
もうひとつ、9月27日現在で申し込めるのが「たたき染め体験会」です。こちらも10月17日に開催されます。ユーカリの葉や園内の植物の葉を使い、オリジナルのハンカチを制作します。講師は同じく髙橋久美子さんです。定員は15人、参加費は2,000円で、当日受付で現金で支払います。
The other activity still accepting applications as of Sept. 27 is a plant-leaf fabric-printing workshop, also on Oct. 17. Participants will use eucalyptus leaves and leaves from plants growing in the zoo to make an original handkerchief. Kumiko Takahashi is also the instructor for this workshop. There are 15 places and the fee is ¥2,000, payable in cash at the event reception.

申込期間が終了した企画：コアラバックヤードツアー
コアラの飼育の裏側を見られる「コアラバックヤードツアー」は、10月18日午前11時から正午まで開催されます。ユーカリ貯蔵庫やバックヤードを見学し、コアラの飼育担当者の話を聞く企画です。定員は5人、参加費は5,600円でした。参加費は当日、現金で支払う予定でした。
The koala backstage tour, whose application period has now closed, will take place from 11 a.m. to noon on Oct. 18. The tour includes a look at the eucalyptus storage area and backstage facilities, along with a talk by a koala keeper. There are five places and the fee is ¥5,600, which was to be paid in cash on the day.

申込期間が終了した企画：コアラの特別おはなし会
10月25日のコアラの日には、「コアラの特別おはなし会」も開催されます。コアラの飼育担当者による特別ガイドに加え、コアラの誕生日ミニPOPセットのお土産が付きます。午前10時から正午まで、金沢自然公園内のののはな館2階レクチャールームで開催されます。定員は50人、参加費は1,000円でした。
On Koala Day, Oct. 25, the zoo will also hold a special koala talk. The programme includes a special guide by a koala keeper and a small set of koala birthday POP displays as a souvenir. It runs from 10 a.m. to noon in the second-floor lecture room of Nonohana-kan in Kanazawa Nature Park. There are 50 places and the fee is ¥1,000.
申込期間は9月19日午前10時から9月25日午後5時までで、応募者多数の場合は抽選でした。こちらも現在は締切済みです。なお、10月24日・25日のイベント期間中は、この特別おはなし会以外にコアラのガイドは行われず、コアラ舎での通常ガイドもありません。

申し込み不要の特別ガイド
申し込みなしで参加できる企画もあります。オオカンガルー特別ガイドは10月24日と25日の午後2時30分から、カンガルーウォークスルー前で行われます。飼育員が40周年を記念してオオカンガルーについて特別に解説します。ただし、ガイド中にウォークスルーの中へ入ることはできません。
There is also a special guide that does not require advance registration. The eastern grey kangaroo special guide will be held at 2:30 p.m. on both Oct. 24 and 25, outside the kangaroo walk-through. A keeper will give a special 40th-anniversary talk about the eastern grey kangaroos. Visitors will not be able to enter the walk-through during the guide.
10月13日から始まる40周年企画展
40周年企画は、特別イベントだけではありません。10月13日から12月27日まで、オセアニア休憩所で2つの展示が行われます。「みんなで作ろう！モザイクアート」では、来園者から募集したオセアニア区の飼育動物の写真を使って、コアラとオオカンガルーのモザイクアートを制作します。写真の募集はすでに終了しています。
The anniversary programme is not limited to special events. From Oct. 13 through Dec. 27, two displays will be held at the Oceania Rest Area. “Let’s Make a Mosaic Art Together!” will create a mosaic of a koala and eastern grey kangaroo using photographs of animals in the Oceania area submitted by visitors. The photo-submission period has already ended.
同じ期間には「コアラ・オオカンガルー来園40周年写真展」も開催されます。コアラとオオカンガルーの懐かしい写真や家系図などが展示され、金沢動物園における40年間の歴史を振り返ることができます。
During the same period, the “Koala and Eastern Grey Kangaroo 40th Anniversary Photo Exhibition” will be held. It will feature nostalgic photographs, family trees and other material documenting the animals’ 40-year history at Kanazawa Zoo.
40周年記念グッズも販売
9月19日から、40周年を記念したグッズの販売も始まっています。現在販売されているのは、金沢動物園オリジナルの「金沢巾着コアライエロー」で税込650円、そして「AQUAバイカラートートコアラ」で税込1,800円です。巾着にはコアラのポポロの写真が使われています。今後も40周年記念グッズやフードが追加される予定です。
Anniversary merchandise also went on sale on Sept. 19. Current items include the zoo’s original Kanazawa Koala Yellow drawstring bag for ¥650 and the AQUA two-tone Koala tote bag for ¥1,800, including tax. The drawstring bag uses a photograph of Popolo the koala. More 40th-anniversary merchandise and food items are being prepared and will be announced by the zoo as they become available.
1986年から続くオーストラリアとのつながり
金沢動物園にとって、1986年10月25日は大きな節目でした。コアラとオオカンガルーが同じ日に来園し、オセアニア区の歴史が始まりました。40周年を迎える今年、その歴史を写真や家系図、飼育員の話、ユーカリを使った体験など、さまざまな角度から楽しめるようになっています。
For anyone interested in the long connection between Japan and Australia, this is a particularly nice little anniversary. It is not simply a chance to see koalas: the programme looks at their history at Kanazawa Zoo, their keepers’ work, eucalyptus, kangaroos and the animals’ continuing connection with Australia.

Kanazawa Zoo is normally open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with admission until 4 p.m. The zoo is open every day during October, and general admission is ¥500.
最寄り駅は京急線の金沢文庫駅です。西口からバスを利用でき、動物園へのアクセス方法や園内へのシャトルバス「コアラバス」については、公式サイトで確認できます。
The nearest railway station is Keikyu Kanazawa-Bunko Station. Buses are available from the west exit, and the zoo also operates a free “Koala Bus” shuttle between the main entrance of Kanazawa Nature Park and the zoo entrance. Note: If you’re interested in taking part in some events and haven’t applied before the application dates for taking part in commemorative events closed don’t give up. (Sorry! I only found out about this event and zoo yesterday.) The zoo’s site lists mistakes in the date that invite confusion, and this may be a sufficient reason for the operators to show some leniency for late applications….purely conjecture on my part, but perhaps worth a try if you desperately want to go? もし「記念イベントに参加したい！」と思っていて、しかも申込期限を過ぎちゃっている場合でも、まだ諦めなくてもいいかも。 （すみません！このイベントと動物園のこと、昨日初めて知ったんです。）それに、動物園のサイトには日付の誤記があって、ちょっと混乱しやすい内容になっている。 そのあたりを理由に、運営側が多少は遅れた申込みにも柔軟に対応してくれる可能性も……あるかも。完全に私の推測ですが、「どうしても行きたい！」という人は、ダメ元で問い合わせてみる価値はあるかも。
