Get Cracking On Aussie Coffee Odyssey In Tokyo

Single O’s FIRECRACKER Stamp Rally

There’s still time to make a very Australian coffee adventure of Tokyo—but not much! Single O’s 2026 FIRECRACKER Stamp Rally runs until Monday, Aug. 31. The challenge is wonderfully simple: visit all five Single O cafés in Tokyo, collect a stamp at each, and enter the draw for prizes.

Single O’s Aussie beginning
Single O began in Surry Hills, Sydney, in 2003, founded by coffee-loving couple Dion and Emma Cohen. The company started as a tiny 20-square-metre café and roastery championing single-origin coffee. Single O came to Japan in 2014 and began roasting in Ryogoku. Its Tokyo operation has grown into five cafés, each with its own neighbourhood character.

The FIRECRACKER challenge
The summer-limited FIRECRACKER blend inspired the rally; the blend itself was launched in 2018 with the Sumida River Fireworks Festival as its inspiration.

At each of the five Tokyo cafés, spend ¥500 or more (tax included) to receive one stamp. This year, staff also give you a keyword at each stop: collect all five and you can complete the hidden message. Even if you don’t complete the keyword, five stamps are enough to enter the prize draw.

Cow on the Corner

Cow on the Cornerは、「Big Things」の中では小さい方だ。

Melbourne’s Dandenong Ranges, “The Hills,” were the settings for two relatively obscure and unrelated TV shows in the 1970s and 1980s. “Solo One” was a spin-off of the successful “Matlock Police” with Paul Cronin reprising the role of Gary Hogan stationed in Emerald before he moved on to the far more successful part of Dave Sullivan in “The Sullivans.” Meanwhile, “Come Midnight Monday” was set in Cockatoo and featured Australia’s then-darling Sally Boyden in one of her rare post-“Young Talent Time” roles. The show ran in 1982, the year before Cockatoo was destroyed in the Ash Wednesday bushfires.

  • Zenshoen, A Story Of Cruel Tragedy

All sorts of memories flooded back to me during a brief ride through Tama Zenshoen, a gorgeous park in outer western Tokyo, but also home to a tragic and cruel past for Japan’s Hansen’s disease patients. Zenshoen is a leprosarium and for most of its history, the 115-year-old facility was shut off from the rest of the world and its inhabitants quarantined inside, sterilized and forbidden from associating with the outside world, largely based on 1951 testimony to the Diet by Kensuke Mitsuda, a staunch segregationist but also unfortunately Japan’s foremost expert on leprosy at the time. This continued for decades, even after it was known that Hansen’s disease was…

A Bagful Of Businesses In This Kangaroo’s Pouch

Kangaroos K.K. operates a handful of different businesses, none of them with a direct relationship with either Australia or marsupials, but there’re are plenty of peas in this macropod. The company operates a mix of social-service, education and community businesses, including foreign-worker support and recruiting; staffing and temporary placement especially for childcare, education and welfare; security services; Japanese language education; children’s snack development and sales; childcare and child development support programs; and related event and training planning. Kangaroos doesn’t explain why it chose the name for the company, but choosing a kangaroo for a childcare, welfare or community business is common and sensible in Japan for three reasons: The pouch…

Why Does Australia’s National Food Cost Less In Japan Than It Does At Home?

Meat pies, Australia’s national dish, are cheaper in Japan (even though they’re made in Bairnsdale) than they are in Australia. Tim Tams, too, up with Aussie Beef as a symbolic food from Down Under, sell in Tokyo for a fraction of the price that Aussie consumers pay for the bikkies. I haven’t looked up the price of Australian beef, but I’d reckon there’s a good chance Japanese consumers have a world away are getting it cheaper than their Australian counterparts. This is happening because there is a duopoly controlling Australian supermarkets, according to The Australia Institute, a public policy think tank. The Institute argues that Coles and Woolworths (Colesworth!), the…
