Australia Takes Over the Cultural Calendar: November’s Japan–Australia Yartz

November brings a particularly interesting collection of Australia–Japan cultural events, covering contemporary art, film, classical music and international museum exchange.

Tokyo welcomes Australian contemporary artist Shaun Gladwell as part of an ambitious multidisciplinary cultural event. An award-winning Australian animation will be screened and made available online, while Ukrainian-born Australian pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk performs in Yokosuka and Tokyo.

There are also opportunities to explore Australian contributions to an international art festival in Gifu and discover the long historical connections between Japan and the Torres Strait.

The National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka continues its exhibition on the historical connections between Japan and the Torres Strait, also known as Zenadth Kes, until December 15.

Situated between northern Australia and Papua New Guinea, the Torres Strait has a long history of contact with Japan. Japanese migrants began settling in the region during the Meiji era, with the pearl-shell industry playing an important role in creating links between the communities.

The exhibition draws on photographs taken by Japanese researcher Ohshima George and others during the 1970s, presenting the cultures, everyday lives and historical experiences of the islands.

It is an opportunity to discover a less familiar chapter of Australia–Japan relations through personal histories and photographic records.

Venue: Thematic Exhibition Hall, National Museum of Ethnology, 10-1 Senri Expo Park, Suita, Osaka.

Dates: September 10–December 15, 2026.

Opening hours: 10:00–17:00; last admission 16:30.
