Summer Sonic turns 25 this year, and the three-day festival has a distinctly Australian flavour.

Two Australian acts are on the bill: Melbourne indie-rockers PRETTY BLEAK perform in Tokyo on Saturday, 15 August, while Sydney-based R&B singer BOY SODA takes the stage in Tokyo on Sunday, 16 August. BOY SODA is also scheduled for the Osaka festival on Friday, 14 August.

PRETTY BLEAK are part of the Saturday lineup at the Sonic Stage, alongside Steve Lacy, Cornelius, Viagra Boys and others. BOY SODA appears on the Mountain Stage on Sunday.

If you haven’t yet encountered Ron Mueck’s extraordinary people, skulls and giant figures in the flesh, this week provides an especially good opportunity.

The Melbourne-born sculptor’s major Mori Art Museum exhibition continues through September, and the museum has extended its hours during the Obon period. From Aug. 8–Aug. 16 , the exhibition opens at 9:00am and stays open until 10:00pm, giving visitors unusually generous hours to see Mueck’s astonishingly lifelike sculptures.

The exhibition features 11 works spanning almost 30 years of Mueck’s career, including Mass, his spectacular installation of 100 giant human skulls.
