Hugh Jackman

Oh, no! What a Hugh-ge spelling mistake!

‘Tokyo’ reproduced in Sydney’s Parramatta on Oct. 15. One of the characters pasted in the window is wrong…

How Did An Australian Koala Conquer Japanese Bedrooms? Australians know koalas love sleeping. One Australian company turned that idea into a global business. Koala launched in Australia in 2015 with mattresses sold directly to consumers. It expanded into Japan just two years later. The timing was bold. Japanese customers already had high expectations for quality and comfort. Koala responded with products designed for compact homes and modern lifestyles. Its Australian identity remained central. The company uses Australia’s iconic marsupial as its brand while promoting simple design and sustainable materials. Today, Koala has become one of Australia’s best-known lifestyle brands in Japan. It proves Australian design…

    Big Blue Heeler

Why Does Australia Have So Many Japanese War Memorials?

Most Australians know about the fierce fighting against Japan during the Second World War. Few realise that Australia is also home to dozens of memorials dedicated to Japanese people. How can a country that fought such a bitter war also preserve monuments honouring former enemies? The answer lies not in politics, but in compassion, reconciliation and a shared belief that every life lost in war deserves to be remembered. Over the past 80 years, Australians and Japanese have worked together to care for cemeteries, restore memorials and commemorate those who never returned home. These quiet places tell an important story about how former enemies became trusted friends. …

  • Frills Attached: When Japan Went Ape Over An Aussie Lizard

Way back in the early 1980s, Australia went from barely being a blip on the average Japanese radar to capturing the nation’s attention thanks to the frill-necked lizard, an endemic Australian reptile that uses its frill to threaten or frighten off predators. The lizard was featured in a March 1984 episode of Waku Waku Dobutsu Land (Exciting Animal Land), a popular TV show in those days when limited information meant news spread more broadly than now. The program offered a frill-necked lizard plush toy to six lucky viewers drawn from a lottery. More than 700,000 entries were received. Then, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation started airing a commercial for its 1984 Mirage…

Pigging Out On Pie Face And ‘Ello Elton

It was a bit of a landmark month as Aussie meet pies went on sale in central Tokyo as Pie Face opened a store in Shibuya, while down the road in Yokohama I got an unexpected chance to see Elton John live. The pies were tasty, but a bit pricey, yet my workmates humored me with a visit there to dine together as the restaurant is within short walking distance of our office. Elton, meanwhile, wasn’t someone I was overly keen on seeing, but I was pleased to get the chance. He was basically going through the motions, though, and didn’t really put on a dazzling display. Having received a…

Fossick
