The Parkes Elvis Festival, a series of events marking Elvis Presley, the late King of Rock’n’Roll, will be held in the central New South Wales town of Parkes, arguably Australia’s quirkiest municipality, from Jan. 9. The Parkes Elvis Festival, now an important annual event, attracted about 200 people when it was first held 20 years ago, but now swells by threefold the town population of 10,000 over the five days it’s held. About 150 events are held in conjunction with the festival, including an Elvis lookalike parade, concerts and the Miss Priscilla contest seeking to find a woman who closes resembles Presley’s wife, Priscilla. As with…

Northern Territory authorities are investigating the motives into the arson attack. Namatjira was active and his work recognized globally at a time when Australia did not even…

Australia is, in a way, flavor of the month of sorts in Japan at the moment. That exalted status is thanks to the humble TimTam. TimTam biscuits are now sold in just about all of Japan’s ubiquitous convenience stores and most station kiosks in the capital and surrounding prefectures. TimTam biscuits were first made in Australia in 1963. They are comprised of two biscuits sandwich cream filling and covered entirely in chocolate. They have become a symbol of Australia. However, ownership of Arnott’s Biscuits Holdings, the company that produces TimTams, has fallen into the hands of Campbell Soup, an American company. This…

Just as Japanese cinema was globally renowned in the 1950s only to subsequently fall into decline, Australian movies lauded across the world in the 1970s and 1980s can now no longer make much of an impact outside of their homeland. Unlike the domestic Japanese market, however, which is of a scale large enough to support its own industry, the Australian domestic movie business is tiny. This ensures that short of making a hit of the likes of the initial Crocodile Dundee series entries, the Mad Max series or something akin to Happy Feet or Moulin Rouge, a general release Australian movie is almost destined to be more of…

Atlantis Marine Park

Atlantis Marine Park on the outskirts of the Western Australian capital of Perth would have to be one of the less successful — and lesser-known — projects that Australian and Japanese organizations have carried out together down through the years. Atlantis Marine Park was a marine mammal park set up in 1981 by Alan Bond, a business tycoon and Australian of the Year who would become Australia’s richest person and a criminal around his halycon days in the 1980s, and Tokyu Corporation, a Japanese general contractor. Perth was growing rapidly. Blessed with a sun-drenched climate, experts forecast what was then regarded as the world’s remotest city was…
