She’ll be Apples!

Australia’s Big Apples (clockwise from top left) — Thulimbah (QLD), Bacchus Marsh (VIC), Spreyton (TAS), Acacia Ridge (QLD), Yerrinbool (NSW), Donnybrook (WA) (inset) Batlow (NSW)
 それだけで、she’ll be apples, mate!

‘Die Jockey,’ ‘Pyscho,’ ‘Odds Calais Summer Days’ & Hugh Jackman’s Other Japanese Lessons

“Psycho,” “Die Jockey!” and “Odds Calais Summer Days” were some of the phrases given on a Japanese language cheat sheet Hollywood heartthrob Hugh Jackman used recently in Japan while here to film the latest installment of the Wolverine movies. Far from being anything sinister, though, Psycho was the description given for saiko, awesome, great, outstanding, the best, Die jockey! the rendition of dai jokki, a large beer glass, and Odds Calais Summer Days, which sounds something akin to a vacation on the French coast, but actually refers to otsukaresamadesu, a largely meaningless phrase used to encourage or praise a colleague upon completing a task and that literally translates…

Thongs

‘You’re Not Taking the Kingswood’…But Japan Did for a Little While

On this day 70 years ago, Australia launched a domestic automaking industry at Fishermen’s Bend in Melbourne to produce Holden cars. Not many outside Australia that the Great Southern Land once produced cars, and perhaps even fewer still are aware that Oz exported some models to Japan. These weren’t cars assembled in Australia and shipped to the world’s then second-largest car market (as would happen in the late 1980s and 1990s, notably with the Subaru Outback). They were cars made with the intent of attracting Japanese consumers. Ironically, one of the cars marketed was the Mazda Roadpacer, a car slightly adapted from an iconic Australian car, the Holden Kingswood. Holden…

Aussie Deli…cious!!! Not Authentic Aussie but Still Yummy

McDonald’s Japan finally began long-awaited sales of the Aussie Deli at its outlets across the country from Aug. 31 for a couple of weeks. Kangaeroo.com has been skeptical about the burger, which comes in two versions — the premium sandwich with cheese and the plain burger. The main ingredient is uncooked pastrami beef in the cold burger and spicy mustard sauce acting as the main condiment. Our big beef, if you’ll pardon the pun, is that although the burgers are being promoted as Australian, the taste is nothing like food served Down Under, where local flavored McDonald’s includes beetroot, eggs and even pineapple. Thus we went into the…

  • Japan’s Favorite Aussie is Not Quite Who She Seems

There’s little doubt about who is the most famous Aussie in Japan nowadays. Miranda Kerr is everywhere; online, on the box, on billboards, on paper, on glossy magazine covers and, to put it simply, on fire. But not everything is about Miranda Kerr in Japan is quite like it seems. Take the photo accompanying this page. It’s Miranda Kerr, right? Er, no. It’s a Japanese impersonator called Zawachin, a 22-year-old performer currently making her break — or, more specifically, making herself up — through a talent to use cosmetics to appear identical to celebrities; as long as it’s only from the mouth up and she covers the lower part of…

Why Did Suntory Choose Jacko For Its Ads?

In the 1980s, one of Australia’s most colourful sporting personalities unexpectedly found himself on Japanese television. AFL star Mark “Jacko” Jackson wasn’t a movie actor or musician, yet Suntory believed he had something special to offer Japanese audiences. In Australia, Mark “Jacko” Jackson was already famous. A talented Australian Rules footballer, he became equally well known for his humour, confidence and unmistakable personality. His catchphrase, “I’m an Individual”, made him one of Australia’s most recognisable media personalities. Japan Was Discovering Australia During the 1980s, Japan’s interest in Australia was growing rapidly. More Japanese families were travelling…
