Call someone “stinking rich” and everyone instantly knows exactly how wealthy you mean. Australia At Osaka Expos: From The Tower Of The Sun To Chasing The Sun
Australia is exhibiting at the recently opened Expo Osaka 2025, and it got me thinking about the difference between now and the last time Japan’s second city held the world’s fair in 1970. Back 55 years ago, Japan was keen on showing to the world its miraculous recovery from the devastation wrought on it in World War II and Australia was keen on pushing itself as an advanced economy basking in glorious sunshine while surrounded by sunny beaches. Alky is the Strine term used to describe an alcoholic. Back in the olden days, this would have been quite an acceptable term, but nowadays, someone with an alcohol dependence would probably be described as having substance abuse disorder. Tinned Food
Tinned food is the Strine for food, or tucker, in a can. Like most forms of English that derive from British English, Strine prefers using tin over can, but both words are understood to mean the same thing. Tinned food は、ストラインで“缶入りの食べ物”、つまり“タッカー（食べ物）”を指す言い方です。イギリス英語の影響を受けた多くの英語と同じく、ストラインでは can より tin を好んで使いますが、どちらの語も同じ意味として理解されています。
