Australia Owes Booming Industry to ‘Ricing’ Son

Australia’s rice industry is among the world’s 20 largest and the business Down Under owes its start to a Japanese immigrant early last century.

Isaburo (Jo) Takasuka (sometimes spelled “Takasuga,” an alternate reading of the characters in his name), a one-time parliamentarian from a samurai family, grew rice experimentally in the Mallee area before creating rice farms in the Swan Hill Irrigation District in Victoria.

Takasuka arrived in Australia in 1905 with his wife, Ichiko, son, Sho, and daughter, Aiko. He began growing rice in 1908 and a second son, Mario, was born in 1910. In 1914, Takasuka overcame drought and floods to produce a commercial crop of rice with the japonica strain. He donated seeds to the New South Wales government and these were used to become the basis of a successful industry in the Riverina district.

Australia now produces about 1 million tons of rice annually. Australian rice farmers are among the world’s most efficient, receiving no government subsidies for production or export, according to Australia’s National Farmers Federation.

Takasuka, the father of the Australian rice industry, returned to Japan and died in 1940, but his descendants remain living in Australia to this day.

  • Did The Sun Never Shine Brighter?

What Does “Never Saw the Sun Shine Brighter” Mean? Aussieが「Never Saw the Sun Shine Brighter」と言うのはどういう意味? An old mate has just won the lottery. Another has become a grandfather for the first time. Someone asks how they’re feeling. With a huge grin, the answer comes back: “I never saw the sun shine brighter.” Nobody is talking about the weather. It’s a wonderfully old-fashioned Aussie way of saying, “I couldn’t be happier,” or “Life has never looked better.” Although it’s not heard as often today, you’ll still come across the expression in older books, films and conversations with older Aussies. Never saw the sun shine brighter” というStrineです。 Expression Never…

How’d Ya Shape An Aussie Garden In Suburban Tokyo?

Alex Endo, arguably Japan’s preeminent designer of Aussie gardens, carried out a remarkable transformation of our block in suburban Tokyo. He planned several months in advance over the winter. When the spring came around, he had a selection of Australian native plants ready to go into the block. How It Started Among the trees he planted in our back yard were a callistemon, a couple of species of grevillea, some myrtles and a banksia. These added to a wattle we had grown in a plant for a couple of years that we put into the ground. How It Turned Out We also added a decent…

CANGAROO(Collaboration of Australia and Nippon for a GAmma Ray Observatory in the Outback)プロジェクトの望遠鏡が設置され、観測が継続されている。

Movemberの「mo」はmoustache(唇ひげ)が由来。 Movember

  • You Know You’re Australian If…

A decade or so ago, Sydney comedian Richard Glover wrote a fairly comprehensive list of typical Australian behaviors that is usually reprinted around this time of year, heading into Australia Day on January 26. Kangaeroo joints the throng of reprinters by adding the list here. You know you’re Australian if: You know the meaning of the word “girt”. You believe that stubbies can be either drunk or worn. You understand that, should an Australian prime minister attempt to invent a nickname for himself, the nation would respond by choosing its own moniker, somewhat less flattering. You believe the best-looking people in the world are those wearing the uniform of the…
