    史上最高カンガルー・ケーキは日本人女性が作った！

    　オーストラリア政府観光局であるTourism Australiaは、先週フェースブックで３００万人の「いいね」を記念として世界最高（考えRoo主観的な意見、、、）なカンガルー・ケーキ製作をシドニーのPlanet Cake社に委託し、実際にそのデザイン・作成などを行ったのは日本人女性だった。 　Naoko Iikura氏は同社のシニア・ケーキ・デコレーたーであり、巨大なカンガルー・ケーキを作成を担当した。 　このケーキはなんと等身大より大きく、高さ２メートルもあり、ものすごく細かく作られて、遠くから見られたら本物そっくりだ。 　同社ウェブサイトによるとNaoko Iikura氏は約８年前日本からオーストラリアに渡って約３年前にヘッドハンティングされた。Naoko Iikura氏の仕事が速くて細かいと、好評だ。創作を見れば、その理由が一目見れば分かる。 　偏見はあることを認めるが、この信じられないほど素晴らしいカンガルー・ケーキはNaoko Iikura氏が天才的だと言っても過言ではない。 Planet Cake Kangaroo Gallery

    Australian Ambassador Urges Japanese TPP Involvement

    Australian Ambassador to Japan Bruce Miller has implored Japan to actively engage in negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Miller, during an interview with a Japanese newspaper during the week, called the relationship between the two countries a “win-win” one, then went on to urge Japan to grow, saying that Asia could not grow without Japan.     　世界健康機構によるとオーストラリアが世界一の肥満大国である。Chockiesは、その現状の大きな理由のひとつであり、どこのスーパーでも一列ぐらい占めているに違いない。Chockiesがあまりにも好きで、「依存症」と自称する人が少なくない。しかし、これは世界共通であるかもしれない。違うのがオージー英語の表現だ。そうだ、、、chockiesはチョコレートのことなのだ。

    オージー英語のアイコンでもある二つのBig Chook

    　ニューサウスウェールズ州にはなんとふたつの偉大なニワトリ・オブジェのBig Chookがある。これはchookがニワトリを称えるだけではなく、chookという言葉自体も称えると言えるだろう。 　そもそもchookは独特なオージー英語である。英語のchickenにかけたり、「ニワトリ」という意味だ。 　一つ目のBig Chookがシドニー郊外にあるマウント・バーノンというところにある。高さも広さも４メートルであるコンクリート製巨大ニワトリは家禽農場の中1986年に立てられた。自称「世界最大のBig Chook」だそう。 　一方、小さい方のBig Chookが同州北東部にあるムーンビにある。ムーンビは家禽業が盛んであり、その象徴として高さ４メートル幅2メートルのニワトリ・オブジェが町の中に作られた。 　上記でふれたように、chookはよく使われているオージー英語である。ニワトリを示すだけじゃなく、理由がよく分からないけどニックネームにも頻繁に使われている。そして、さまざまな表現にも登場する。 例えば、chook raffleは、厳密に言えば「ニワトリをくじ引きで売る」という意味だけど多くの場合仕事などが上手くこなさない人に対してyou couldn’t run a chook raffle（chook raffleでも上手くできない）と野次として使われている。また、face like a chook’s arse（ニワトリのケツのような顔をしている）というのが「悲しい表情」を示し、feed the chooksは報道陣のスクラムなど大勢の人の前で嫌な話をすること。Feed the chooksも別に下品な意味もあり、自慰行為を示す。
