豪キャブラリ：Home Unit

Home unitは独特なオージー英語表現であり、アパートという意味。英語ではflatと言い、米語がapartment。ただのunitとも言う。

Home unit is a distinctly Australian English term for what British English refers to as a flat and American English calls an apartment. All three terms are understood and used in Australian English, too, and unit alone is also in wide use.

    元祖Big Bananaが豪のBig Things原点だ

    　オーストラリアの「Big Things」現象は、1964年ニューサウスウェールズ州北部のコッフス・ハーバーにあるビッグ・バナナで始まった。 　同町が熱帯地にあり、ビッグ・パイナップル同様に熱帯地果物産地だ。が、1960年代に入ると格安の輸入品に対しての競争力低下などがあり、綺麗な海岸や海を生かせて観光地として生まれ変わろうとした。その結果がなんとビッグ・バナナだった。 　元祖ビッグ・バナナは長さ13メートルと高さ5メートルである。中に入り、近くにバナナ農園かお土産屋や乗り物及びウォータースライダーがあり、立派な観光地となっている。その他、まねするビッグ・バナナが他の地域にもできた（別途で後日お話しするね！）。 View Larger Map Big Banana Official Website

    言うのはなんだけど、（残念ながら考えRoo自身を含めて）多くのオージーがぐずることが大好きでまるで国民的な行動と言っても過言ではないかもしれない。オージー英語では、このぐずぐず文句を言う癖（？）は、Whingeと言う。 　皮肉的に多くのオージーの間Whingeと言えばPommy（イギリス人のスラングな言い方）を思い浮かべ、Whinging Pommyが（少し軽蔑を込めて）よく使われている表現だ。 　ちなみに、whingeを頻繁にする人はwhingerと言う。
