Why Do Over 100 Aussie Communities Have Japanese Sister Cities?

From school exchanges to sporting visits and lifelong friendships, sister-city relationships have quietly connected Australians and Japanese for decades. Today, more than 100 Australian communities have an official partnership with a Japanese city.

学校交流やスポーツ交流、市民同士の友情まで――姉妹都市交流は長年にわたり日豪の人々を結び続けてきました。現在、100を超えるオーストラリアの自治体が日本の都市と正式な姉妹都市関係を結んでいます。

Friendship begins between communities

友情は町と町から始まる

National treaties are signed by governments, but sister-city relationships are built by ordinary people. Students, teachers, musicians, athletes and volunteers have travelled between Australia and Japan for decades, creating friendships that often last a lifetime.

国同士の条約は政府が結びますが、姉妹都市交流を支えているのは市民です。学生や教師、音楽家、スポーツ選手、ボランティアなど、多くの人々が長年にわたり日豪を行き来し、生涯続く友情を育んできました。

More than 100 partnerships

Australia and Japan currently have 107 sister-city and sister-state relationships. Together they also support more than 550 sister-school partnerships, making this one of the world’s most extensive local-government exchange networks.

現在、日豪間には107の姉妹都市・姉妹州関係があります。さらに550を超える姉妹校が交流を続けており、地方自治体レベルでは世界でも有数の国際交流ネットワークとなっています。

Learning from each other

互いに学び合う関係

These partnerships are about far more than ceremonial visits. Many have led to student exchanges, language study, business links, disaster support and cultural festivals. Some Australian communities even received donations from their Japanese sister cities during the devastating 2019–20 bushfires.

姉妹都市交流は公式訪問だけではありません。学生交換、日本語学習、経済交流、災害時の支援、文化祭など、さまざまな形で実を結んでいます。2019～20年の大規模森林火災では、日本の姉妹都市から支援金が寄せられた例もありました。

A friendship that grows quietly

Unlike international headlines, sister-city exchanges rarely make the news. Yet every homestay, classroom visit and community festival strengthens understanding between Australians and Japanese. These local friendships have become one of the strongest foundations of the Australia–Japan relationship.

姉妹都市交流は大きなニュースになることは少ないかもしれません。しかし、ホームステイや学校交流、地域のお祭りの一つひとつが、日豪の相互理解を深めています。こうした草の根の交流こそが、今日の日豪関係を支える大きな土台となっているのです。

    海で下水を流すことに抗議するために制作されたBig Poo

    オーストラリアの数多く「Big Things」の中では実際に利用されているものや観光振興以外の意味あるものがほとんど無いがニューサウスウェールズ州にあるキアマにあるBig Pooがかなり違う。 　発泡スチロール製のBig Pooは長さ約5メートル高さ約１メートルの「うんち」オブジェだ。シドニー水道局が下水再利用しないことに対して抗議するためにつくられた。 　元々約10年前同州州議会議員イアン・コーエン氏の委託で作られて観光町であるキアマの入り口に設置した。作られた理由は同局が下水を再利用できるなのに、再利用しないで下水を海に流すだけだ、とコーエン氏がいう。未だに同局が下水再利用が進んでいないといい、再利用主張するように呼びかけているキャンペーン拠点で設置している。しかし、発泡スチロールで作られているため軽くあっちこっちで動かしているらしい。 　「Big Pooは発泡スチロールで作られている理由は処理されていない下水と同じように浮かべるからだ」とコーエン氏が言う。同氏は、海が綺麗で評判されているキアマに下水を再利用しない限り大きなうんちをそこで流れていることと同じだ。 大きな地図で見る

    　 オーストラリアメルボルン市が19日付4年連続「世界で最も居住に適した都市」として選ばれた。 　先週、ニュージーランドのオークランド市とタイで世界で最も友情的な都市と選べたことに続きオーストラリアの住み良い環境が世界に認められ続けている。 　「世界で最も居住に適した都市」が英国エコノミスト誌の調査ユニットに選ばれた。クオリティ・オブ・ライフ世界ベスト10都市中4都市がオーストラリアにあり、メルボルンの他シドニー、パースとアデレードがランクインした。
