(Costumed) Kangaroo Stars In The “Worst Sports Movie Ever Made”

Matilda has been described online as “the worst sports movie ever made.” Kindly, as it turns out.Matilda was a dreadful, alleged comedy about a boxing kangaroo that challenges for the world heavyweight champion title. The movie was made in 1978, when Muhammad Ali was probably at his most widely popular (and the reigning world champion), and starred Elliot Gould, who was then still not too far off the peak of a career that continues going strong today.Co-starring was another A-lister, Robert Mitchum, so it’s hard to argue that the cast and circumstances surrounding the movie didn’t pack a punch.Unfortunately, the kangaroo featured in the film was clearly a bloke in a…

What Does Wagyu Tell Us About Australia–Japan Cooperation?

Australia’s wagyu industry is about much more than premium beef. It is the product of decades of trust, shared knowledge and cooperation between Japanese and Aussie producers. In many ways, wagyu has become a symbol of one of the world’s most successful agricultural partnerships. More Than an Industry The success of Aussie wagyu cannot be measured only by export figures or restaurant menus. Its real achievement lies in the partnership that made it possible. Over several decades, producers in Australia and Japan built relationships based on mutual respect, patience and a willingness to learn from one another. Japanese breeders spent…

Boomerang Shrine And Shooting The Rapids

Mrs. Kangaeroo and I got another wonderful experience shooting down the rapids in the delightful Saitama Prefecture town of Nagatoro, which is also home to a shrine hoping to draw people back with something of an Aussie touch. Boomerang Kaeru Shrine, just outside Nagatoro Station, is dedicated to the worship of frogs, but is actually a play on words. The Japanese for frog is kaeru (蛙), but also a homonym for returning home (帰る), hence the boomerang, which (allegedly) returns to the thrower upon being hurled. (This is a story for another day). Also got to find some Engrish that appealed to my eternal schoolboy side.

What Japanese Snack Company’s Catchy Commercial Drove Aussies Crackers?

For years, Australians couldn’t get three simple syllables out of their heads: “Sa-ka-ta.” A catchy television commercial turned a little-known Japanese rice cracker into a household name, proving that great advertising can cross cultures as easily as great food. A Tune Nobody Could Forget During the 1990s and into the Noughties, Sakata rice crackers burst onto Australian television with a simple commercial. Its infectious adaptation of Trio’s hit song Da Da Da repeated one word over and over. “Sa-ka-ta.” It was impossible not to remember. A Japanese Snack Finds Australia Rice crackers were still unfamiliar to many Australians.
