Goanna: Australia’s Big Lizard And A Very Different Kind of Predator

Spot a goanna in the Australian bush and its size might surprise you. These large monitor lizards can be imposing, depending on the species. In 1980s Australia, however, the name leapt from the animal kingdom into the headlines as the codename for a billionaire at the centre of a national controversy: media magnate Kerry Packer.

Meaning

A goanna is one of Australia’s monitor lizards. The word is commonly encountered in discussions of native wildlife and the bush. The word also has a historical association. In 1984, Kerry Packer became known in media reports by the codename “Goanna” in connection with the Costigan Royal Commission inquiry.

Example

“We spotted a goanna near the walking track.”

“The newspaper referred to the businessman as Goanna.”

Goanna is a useful word for anyone interested in Australian wildlife. Some First Nations communities have traditionally eaten goannas, but food practices vary between communities and regions. Reports about Packer raised serious allegations involving taxation and organised crime. These were allegations arising from the inquiry and media coverage, not facts that should simply be presented as proven crimes. Packer denied the allegations, and the controversy led to further legal and political battles. He was cleared.

Australia–Japan connection

In Japan, an animal name used as a codename for a controversial public figure might sound mysterious. The Goanna affair is an example of an animal name becoming part of Australia’s political and media history.

Knowing that Aussie English uses “goanna” for these lizards also makes conversations about Australian wildlife easier to follow.

If I spot a goanna in the bush, I reckon the sensible thing is to respect the wildlife and watch quietly. If I see “Goanna” in an old newspaper, though, I think of Australia’s media history in the 1980s. Same word, very different context.

Dunny

How Paul McCartney Clipped His Wings In Japan

On this day in 1980…. …ex-Beatle Paul McCartney was arrested in Japan. He was caught with 219 grams of marijuana in his bag at New Tokyo International Airport in Narita, the airport was then known. McCartney had arrived in Japan for a concert tour with his band, Wings. Suss out

Check out my suspicions、要は「思っている疑問を検証しよう」から省略し、砕けた言い方に変わりsuss outという形になった訳だ。

Budgie smugglers
