At about the precise moment this post goes online, England and Australia will be fighting it out for the Ashes in Brisbane, Australia, the long-awaited first Ashes Test Match in Australia for four years.

Cricket is Australia’s national summer sport (and England’s…). The first Test between England and Australia in 1877 became the first official international match, and the two countries have hosted each other at roughly two-year intervals since, except during wartime. Since 1882, they have fought for The Ashes, officially the “remains of English cricket.” The Ashes came about in response to an unexpected Australian victory over England in 1882 when an obituary mourning the death of English cricket was placed in a newspaper, noting “the body will be cremated and the Ashes taken to Australia.” The obituary touched a nerve in both countries and The Ashes tradition was born, becoming cricket’s oldest, most traditional rivalry and one that attracts the attention of cricket followers worldwide.

Cricket is played in over 100 countries, but few Japanese know about it. But there are actually cricket leagues in Japan and the national team plays World Cup qualifiers, though it has yet to progress to the finals. Over 1,000 people play cricket in Japan, which has its headquarters at the base of Mount Fuji in Shizuoka. For more about cricket in Japan, please visit the Japan Cricket Association website. It should be noted that the Japanese women’s team led by Ema Kuribayashi took out the bronze medal in the Asian Games held in Guangchou, China, defeating the hosts in the fight for third place.

Like Strine, cricket has its own peculiar vocabulary, and a lot more other eccentricities, though these will be covered later in separate posts. In the meantime, an anonymous English writer in Britain in the 1970s came up with the explanation of cricket below. The English is as indecipherable as the Japanese, but frighteningly, would be obvious to those familiar with cricket.

Cricket: As explained to a newcomer…

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that’s in the side that’s in goes out, and when he’s out he comes in and the next man goes in until he’s out. When they are all out, the side that’s out comes in and the side that’s been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

    Watch Your Words!

Many foreigners guffaw at the frequent mangling of English that some Japanese can achieve and there’re plenty of websites and the like dedicated to highlighting these flaws, but they should note that this can go both ways. Perhaps a tad of extra time and consultation could have gone into the names of some of these products or places. Fukuppy was probably not the best name to give a character intended to promote a company called Fukushima Industries, especially as for most of the world, the company name evoked images of one of the worst nuclear reactor accidents in history. Fukuppy, or at least a phrase remarkably close to that, is…

How Did Wagyu Become An Aussie Success Story?

Australia is now one of the world’s largest producers of wagyu beef, but few people know that its success began with a remarkable partnership between Japanese genetics and Aussie cattle producers. This is the story of how trust, science and shared ambition created one of the world’s great agricultural success stories. A Japanese Treasure Finds a New Home For centuries, wagyu cattle were raised almost exclusively in Japan. Their unique genetics produced the exceptional marbling that made Japanese beef famous throughout the world. Until the late twentieth century, very few wagyu cattle or their genetics left Japan. Everything changed when Aussie cattle producers recognised the…

  • Anti-Asian ‘Rage Ranga’ Pauline Hanson’s Soft Spot For Japan

Populist politicians are on the ascendency across the globe. Japan is heading to the polls with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who can probably be called a populist, tapping into strong anti-foreigner sentiment to give her Liberal Democratic Party its traditional grip on power. Joining demagogues like Trump, Farage, Le Pen, Wilders and Milei is Australia’s own “rage ranga” Pauline Hanson, whose political fortunes have taken an astonishing turn. Before going forward, a bit of disclosure: I despise the right-wing form of demagoguery spreading around the world, but lean toward populism on the opposite side of the political spectrum. I’m an angry, fearful old man. That makes me a prime populist…

Why Do Japanese Musicians Keep Bringing Taiko to Australia?

From school halls to multicultural festivals, the powerful sound of taiko echoes across Australia. Behind every performance are Japanese teachers and volunteers who have spent decades sharing far more than music. More Than a Performance Taiko performances are exciting. But rehearsals are where friendships begin. Australian and Japanese players practise together for months before stepping onto the stage. Many Japanese instructors speak only limited English. Many Australian students know little Japanese. Rhythm becomes their shared language. Community festivals across Australia regularly feature taiko performances. They attract audiences of every background. For many…

The Spirit of Australia, the flying…dinosaur? Australia’s fauna is unique, and that trend may even extend back hundreds of millions of years to the Cretaceous period, at least in terms of naming patterns. One of the few known endemic Australian dinosaurs was discovered only recently; 1996, to be precise. And it was promptly given a good old Aussie name of Qantassaurus…a moniker honoring something archetypally prehistoric — an airline. Qantas, in fact. Australia’s one-time national carrier. Australia’s Qantas, of course, is renowned for having the enviable record of being the only major carrier never to have had a fatal crash. Less well-known is the fact…
