Eel Chips And Catty Kerr

Wasn’t able to get away much this summer, but am delighted to roll into work every day and be greeted by an Aussie adorning a huge billboard, thanks to Miranda Kerr dressed in a cat outfit.

Otherwise, it’s been a push to get over the line in the busy season.

How Did Japan Change the Way Artist Margaret Preston Saw Australia?

A journey that began with Japanese prints Margaret Preston (1875–1963) helped change the look of modern Australian art. Her striking prints of native flowers, harbour views and birds drew on an unexpected source: Japan’s centuries-old tradition of ukiyo-e woodblock printing. But this was not simply a case of an Australian artist admiring Japanese pictures from a distance. Preston travelled to Japan herself, returning to study the craft that had fascinated her for years. Preston first developed her interest in Japanese prints while travelling and studying in Europe. In Paris, she visited the Musée Guimet, now the National Museum of Asian Arts, and studied ukiyo-e. She was drawn…

Go Go Australia Festival In Matsudo Stems Out Of A Friendship Grown From Seeds

A letter, a eucalyptus tree and 55 years of Australia–Japan connections A schoolgirl asking for eucalyptus seeds might seem an unlikely beginning for an international relationship. In 1958, a student at Matsudo Municipal Daigo Junior High School wrote to the Australian Embassy asking for eucalyptus seeds. The request was answered, and the relationship between Matsudo and what is now the City of Whitehorse in Melbourne gradually developed. In 1971, the two cities formally became sister cities. In 2026, Matsudo and Whitehorse are celebrating 55 years of their sister-city relationship. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Japan–Australia Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation….

A Symbol Of Japan That Fits Australia Like A Shoe

Given the powerful pull of the surf culture in Australia, a link with Katsushika Hokusai‘s The Great Wave Off Kanagawa that immediately conveys an image of Japan was almost inevitable, but also symbolizes the strong ties between the two countries almost made for each other. Countless Australian companies, organizations, entrepreneurs, artists and others utilize or have utilized directly or derivatively the iconic Japanese work forming one of Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Even though the Great Wave is an instantly recognizable image that embodies the essence of Japanese spirit, particularly with the inclusion of Mount Fuji, Australia has long recognized the work as a shared connection between the countries….

  • Sounds to Trigger an Aussie

Prompted by a Scottish mate’s post on Twitter about a tune that reminds him of his homeland, I got to thinking about the same kinds of songs that have an effect on me regarding Australia, my native country. While doing so, I realized there are probably a few shared by just about every Aussie on the planet. For Australians in their mid-60s and under, there is only one answer to the question posed by Doc Neeson and the Angels in their 1976 song, Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again? Ironically, the song was only a minor hit when first released, but has since became an iconic tune Down…
