Long before exchange students, social media and Zoom meetings, two communities decided they wanted to become friends. Their decision sparked a movement that now links more than 100 Australian and Japanese cities and has brought hundreds of thousands of people together.

留学やSNS、オンライン会議が普及するずっと前、オーストラリアと日本の二つの町は「友達になろう」と決めました。その小さな決断は、今では100を超える姉妹都市交流へと発展し、何十万人もの人々を結び付けています。

One of the World’s Earliest Connections

Australia and Japan’s first sister-city relationship was established in 1963 between Lismore, New South Wales, and Yamatotakada, Nara Prefecture.

Only eighteen years had passed since the end of the Second World War.

Choosing friendship over history was a remarkable act of goodwill.

The idea wasn’t driven by national governments.

Instead, local leaders, schools and community groups wanted ordinary people to meet, learn from one another and build lasting friendships.

That philosophy still guides many exchanges today.

A Growing Network

The success of Lismore and Yamatotakada inspired many others.

Cities including Melbourne and Osaka, Sydney and Nagoya, Brisbane and Kobe, and dozens more established their own partnerships.

Today there are more than 100 Australia–Japan sister-city relationships, along with hundreds of sister-school partnerships.

As Australia and Japan celebrate 50 years of modern friendship, sister cities remain one of the relationship’s quiet success stories.

They remind us that diplomacy doesn’t happen only in parliament buildings.

Sometimes it begins in a school classroom, a town hall or a family dining room.

Trade agreements and diplomatic visits often make the headlines.

Yet some of the strongest Australia–Japan friendships began with two local councils deciding that their communities should get to know each other.

More than sixty years later, that simple idea is still bringing people together.
