日本で楽しむオーストラリアのYartz：2026年9月18日〜30日

9月後半の日本は、オーストラリア関連イベントがかなり充実しています。オーストラリア人ヴァイオリニストのレイ・チェン、豪州出身ベーシストのマーティ・ホロベック、参加型音楽イベントのPub Choirまで、音楽とスポーツが続々登場。一方、岐阜では国際芸術祭、大阪ではトレス海峡と日本の知られざる歴史を紹介する展覧会が開催中です。

そして10月以降も、The Rubens、Shonen Knife、Bowerbird Collective、アレクサンダー・ガヴリリュクなど、オーストラリアと日本をつなぐイベントが続きます。

レイ・チェンが東京へ

オーストラリアを代表するヴァイオリニスト、レイ・チェンが9月19日、すみだトリフォニーホールに登場します。ニュージャパン・フィルハーモニックとの共演で、バッハ、マックス・リヒターによるヴィヴァルディ、サラサーテというプログラム。

Australian bassist Marty Holoubek takes over Shinjuku Pit Inn for three days and six concerts. The daytime and evening programmes are different, ranging from Japanese folk music and traditional instruments to experimental work and several trio configurations. There are two shows each day from September 20 to 22, making this one of the month’s most substantial Australian-linked music events.

Australian progressive art-rock trio Kiss of Reality is touring Japan. The group, featuring David Pittaway, Marcus Richmond and Konrad Park, plays four dates in Kashiwa, Niigata, Chiba and Tokyo. 新潟県十日町市のオーストラリア・ハウスでは、9月23日に恒例の稲刈り体験が行われます。オーストラリア・ハウスを管理する地元の田んぼで、秋の実りを実際に収穫する体験です。ただし、申込締切は9月17日でした。参加を希望する場合は、キャンセルなどによる空きがあるか主催者に確認する必要があります。

Australia House in Tokamachi, Niigata, hosts its annual rice-harvesting experience on September 23. Participants head into the rice fields around Urada to experience the autumn harvest and the rural setting surrounding Australia House. The application deadline was September 17, however, so anyone still interested should contact the organisers to ask whether a cancellation has created an opening.

Pub Choirが渋谷で大合唱

オーストラリア発の参加型音楽イベント、Pub Choirが9月24日に東京へ戻ってきます。ブリスベンで始まったこのプロジェクトでは、観客がただ音楽を聴くのではありません。オーストラリア人の歌手、指揮者、作曲家Astrid Jorgensenの指導で、参加者全員が約90分でポップソングを3声のハーモニーに仕上げます。楽譜が読めなくても、オーディションもありません。

Australian participatory singing phenomenon Pub Choir returns to Tokyo on September 24. Founded in Brisbane by Australian singer, conductor and composer Astrid Jorgensen, Pub Choir turns an audience into a choir. Participants learn a popular song in three-part harmony in around 90 minutes. There are no auditions and no requirement to read music.

岐阜県下呂市では、9月11日から国際芸術祭「下呂 Art Discovery 2026」が始まっています。参加アーティストの中には、メルボルンを拠点に活動するMadeleine FlynnとTim Humphreyもいます。森、温泉街、旧街道、廃校などを舞台に、14か国・地域から59組のアーティストが作品を展開。自然の中でオーストラリアのアーティストによる音の作品を体験できる、ちょっと変わった日豪交流です。

Gero Art Discovery 2026 opened in Gero, Gifu, on September 11. Melbourne-based artists Madeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey are among the international participants. The festival brings 59 artists and artist groups from 14 countries and regions into forests, hot-spring areas, historic streets and a former school. It provides an unusual opportunity to encounter Australian sound art in a Japanese rural landscape.

トレス海峡と日本――知られざる日豪史

大阪の国立民族学博物館では、「トレス海峡（ゼナドスケス）と日本――大島襄二写真コレクションから見た交流と歴史」が開催中です。トレス海峡はオーストラリア最北部、パプアニューギニアとの国境近くに位置します。日本人は明治時代からこの地域に移住し、真珠貝産業などを通じて大きなコミュニティを築きました。今回の展示では、1970年代に日本の調査隊が撮影した大島襄二の写真資料を中心に、その歴史と人々の暮らしを紹介します。

The National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka is presenting an exhibition exploring the long and surprisingly close relationship between Japan and the Torres Strait. The Torres Strait, also known as Zenadth Kes, lies at the northern tip of Australia near Papua New Guinea. Japanese people began moving to the region during the Meiji era, with pearl-shell industries helping create substantial Japanese communities. The exhibition draws heavily on photographs taken by Japanese researcher George Ohshima in the 1970s.

巨大な人物像から極端に小さな人物像まで、ミュエクの作品は人間の身体を「大きさ」という単純な方法で見慣れないものに変えてしまいます。六本木でまだ見ていない人は、今月最後のチャンスです。

The Yokohama Archives of History continues its panel exhibition on the eucalyptus trees and architecture associated with the Yokohama War Cemetery until October 25. It offers a less familiar way of looking at the Australia–Japan relationship through architecture, gardens and the history of Commonwealth war graves. It is a quieter Yartz item, but an intriguing one for anyone interested in the deeper history connecting the two countries.
