Australia has seen many unusual travellers, but not many–if any–have worn a full body cat suit. So who is Catman, and why did he walk so far? Whatever the story, Aussies love the Catman that Japan gave them in a big way!

Background

Strange Catman is Kentaro Jin, a traveller from Osaka. He began his walk in November 2023 after a painful breakup. He pushed a yellow wheelbarrow across Australia. In Japanese, a wheelbarrow is called a 猫車, which inspired his cat identity.

キャットマンは大阪出身の陣健太郎氏。建設作業員だった彼は、彼女と別れた後位に来豪し、黄色い手押し車を押しながら豪州を西海岸から東海岸へと横断した。

The Forgotten Story

Catman walked more than 6,400 kilometres from Carnarvon to Sydney. He often worked casual jobs in towns like Albany and Esperance to fund the journey. Locals welcomed him with humour and kindness. His cheerful videos attracted over 850,000 Instagram followers. He reached the Sydney Opera House on March 14, 2026. Thousands celebrated his arrival. Catman also raised more than $50,000 for childhood cancer research. He said Australian generosity surprised him every day.

    I got to make a flying visit to the “Bird” exhibition held at the National Museum of Nature and Science. The exhibition traced birds’ roles in ecosystems, dating from their evolution from dinosaurs through to the important roles they play today.
