「やばいリンガル」　Clobber　（折り返し叩くこと）

　オージー英語って、多くの言葉がオーストラリア独特な使い方があって、ほかの国で話す英語と言葉が同じでも意味がまったく違うことがたまにある。ここでは、その例を数多く紹介します。今日は、clobberの誤解について見てみます。

Strine has some particular uses for words that aren’t always used the way they are in other English-speaking languages…and misusing these can sometimes cause trouble – or strife as it is in Strine – either while Down Under or elsewhere.     豪最低製品が2013年Shonky賞で選ばれる

    　Shonkyは、独特なオージー英語スラング言葉一つであり、「怪しい」という意味だ。 　このShonkyは、一般消費者向け製品やサービスなどを信頼度調査・評価などを行なっている雑誌である「Choice」誌が2006年以降毎年全豪で最も信頼できない商品を選別し「Shonky賞」を与える。 　2013年の「第8回Shonky賞」の受賞社が29日付で発表され、バナナ・ハニー無しの「バナナ・ハニー・ドリンク」やこっそりと値上げしたエネルギー会社がゲーム・メーカーEAや航空会社カンタスと一緒にワースト８怪しい商売方が指摘された。 　第8回Shonky賞受賞社は、「放し飼い鶏からのエコ卵」として売られた養鶏卵を販売するecoeggs、以前に指摘があったにも関わらず作り続けた子供が飲み込める大きさなおしゃぶりを作るNUK、海外で無料が豪で1分$2.50（約250円）請求するEAゲームサポート、値上げの通知を請求書の裏に小さい字で書き一般発表がないままで請求書を送信したから消費者に値上げの知らせをしたEnergy Australia、大きいサイズティッシュを発売したが実際に15%小さくなったものを出したKleenex Australia、不可能にもかかわらず約$1000でブラック・リスト削除などを約束したCredit Repair Australia、とバナナ・ハニーづリンクを売れたがバナナもハニーも含まれていないOats Expressと航空会社カンタスのウェブサイトで検索ツールバーをダウンロードする見返りにマイルを与える計画でシドニーメルボルン間に相当するマイルを得るために8年間もかかる。 　 Choiceは、2006年から毎年Shonky賞を与えている。 Choice第8回Shonky賞公式サイト Shonky賞歴代受賞恥殿堂

  • After the Apocalypse….

    We’ve just had a wonderful weekend enjoying the pleasures of the Tama Hills Recreation Area, which combines luxurious quarters with wild, somewhat terrifying scenery reminiscent of what a world without humans might look like. It’s the latter that continues to delight me in the bi-annual visits we’ve been fortunate to make over the past decade or so, though such opportunities may about to draw to a close. We will enjoy them while we can, though.

    豪キャブラリー： Sooky

    オーストラリア人の多くがぐずることが大好きで、よく文句をいう。こういう方々は「sooky」と呼ばれる。 　厳密に言えばsookyは「よく泣く」という意味であり、sook「泣く」（動詞）の副詞であるが、別に泣かなくても文句や愚痴をたくさん言えばsookyと言われる可能性が高い。子どもに対してよく使う言葉なので大人に対して言われるとちょっと見下している感じもある。 　ちなみに、sookを名詞として使う場合は実際にsookをする人を示せるというとても便利な役割を果たせる言葉でもある。

    「やばいリンガル」Lurk (待ち伏せる)

    　普通、米・英語ではlurkにはちょっと暗いイメージがあるが、オージー英語ではそれに加えてもっと軽い感じの意味もある。クリックすれば、どのように違うかが分かるよ。 　To lurk implies something dark when normally used in English, but when it comes to Strine, being on a good lurk in Australia is not such a bad deal.
