    Nissan Bluebird Oozui: When Australia (Briefly) Exported Cars to Japan

    This year marks the 20th anniversary of Australia’s disastrous foray into exporting cars to Japan. For a brief period from 1989 to 1992, fully imported Bluebird Aussie cars made in Australia went on sale in Japan. The Bluebird Aussie was apparently the result of Nissan Australia’s Matilda Project, which had aimed to make a solely Australian car for Australian conditions, but ended up being a modified bluebird. Australia was, at the time, at the peak of its powers in the enormously fickle Japanese market.     知られざる日豪関係のルーツ　What You Didn’t Know about Australia-Japan Relations 日豪関係のルーツは、まさにアクロバティックに始まった。１８６７年に日本の曲芸団がオーストラリアを訪問した数年後（具体的な日付は不明。１８７１年という説もあれば、１８７４年という説もある）、Sakuragawa Rikinosukeという曲芸師がオーストラリア人女性と結婚して、豪州に移住した日本人として初めて記録された。 Japan-Australia relations started off by swinging into action – literally. First contact came in 1867 when a Japanese acrobatic troupe visited Down Under in 1867. A few years later (the exact date is unknown – some say 1871, others 1874), Rikinosuke Sakuragawa, an acrobat touring Melbourne with another troupe, married an Australian woman and they settled in Queensland, where their descendants remain today.

    A Breakout Performance Focusing on Australia’s Cowra

    Kaura no Hancho Kaigi (Honchos’ Meeting in Cowra) superbly dramatizes events surrounding a definitive incident in Australia-Japan relations.     豪キャブラリー： Chook

    　チキン（鶏）はオーストラリア特有の鳥ではないが、chookという呼び方は独特なオージー英語だ。ちなみにchookがオージー英語で生むのはgoogy eggだ。また、コミュニティグループなどでよく行なわれるくじ引きを「chook raffle」と呼ぶ。由来はおそらく通常1等の賞品が冷凍チキンだったからだろう。なぜだか分からないが、chookは人のニックネームとしてもよく使われている。
