Former Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam (left) tried to revolutionize the spelling of Australian English…he failed miserably.
are→ar, were→wer, give→giv, have→hav, large→larg, some→som, because→becaus, gauze→gauz, leave→leav, freeze→freez, valley→vally, achieve→achiev, examine→examin, practise→practis, opposite→opposit, involve→involv, serve→serv, heart→hart.
Whitlam’s November 1972 election win raised massive expectations of reform, but ended in disgrace with his dismissal at the hands of the (unelected) governor-general in November 1975.

Draw a breth for progress,
Tred abrest ahed.
Fight agenst old spelling,
Better “red” than “read”.
Spred the words at brekfast,
Mesure them in bed,
Dream of welth and tresure,
Better “ded” than “dead”.

Let’s Barbie! Aussie-Style BBQing for the Japanese!

Australia beef is the most visibly successful Australian export to Japan, leaving considerable distance to its closest rivals, which these days are probably Tim Tams, Miranda Kerr and hordes of drunken ocker snow bunnies in country towns like Niseko and Hakuba. To be honest, Oz doesn’t really enter the consciousness of most Japanese, except for Aussie Beef, which is probably the first thing that comes to mind for many Nihonjin when asked about Oz. And this year, Meat & Livestock Australia Ltd (MLA) is going all-out to try and convert Japanese consumers to worshiping the barbie in much the same manner that many Aussies do. MLA is conducting a huge…

Greenie

A greenie in Strine is someone with a strong conviction for protecting or restoring the natural environment. It can be used somewhat derogatorily, especially as Australia is a fairly conservative country. Greenie can also be used to describe someone with a strong sense of social justice, regardless of their views on the environment. Greenie is now used globally in English, but the term originated in Australia. Example: Some greenie down the track was going on about saving the bush like it was his life’s mission, mate.
