*BYO(Bring Your Ownの省略。
*”How’s it going?” (オージー英語のHow are you?

Chook

  • A Little-Known, Bizarre Australia-Japan Christmas Story

Dec. 25, the original date of this post, is Christmas Day, but Christmas also gives its name to an island with a little-known — and bizarre — role in Australia-Japan relations. An Australian territory, Christmas Island was with Nauru and parts of New Guinea parts of Australian-governed lands the Japanese occupied during World War II. There’s an interesting tale behind Japan’s wartime occupation of Christmas Island, though. It was long thought the island would be targeted because of its rich phosphate deposits. Indeed, the Imperial Japanese Navy headed to the island in March 1942. The Allied troops defending Christmas Island realized they were outnumbered by an overpowering…

    Grand Final (Granny)

Australia is a sport-loving country, possibly more than most. And the ultimate game that decides a champion in Australian sports is almost invariably the grand final. Real Strine could give no other fair dinkum name to a grand final, which is the match that determines the best club or team for its particular season, though we do sometimes refer to the match as the “granny,” too. The most notable grand final of Australian sports is played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, usually on the last Saturday in September, to determine the premiership team of the Australian Football League. The winners of that match are the world champions, but…
