　今、オーストラリアは真夏に向かっているので、町の中では多くのオージーがthong姿を見せてくれるようになる。しかし、それを他の英語圏の人に言ったら、彼らは顔を赤らめるだろう。何でだろう？オーストラリアでのThong姿は、全然恥ずかしくないのに。

It’s approaching midsummer in Australia and many Aussies would now be getting about in thongs. Tell that to someone from another English-speaking country and they may assume it would be a time for red faces. Why thongs? And why so embarrassing?

  • 豪キャブラリー：Greenie

    　ストライン（オージー英語）で greenie というのは、自然環境を守ったり再生したりすることに強い信念を持つ人のことを指します。オーストラリアは比較的保守的な国なので、この語はやや侮蔑的に使われることもあります。また、環境問題への考え方に関係なく、社会正義への強い関心を持つ人を指す場合もあります。Greenie は今では世界中の英語で使われていますが、もともとはオーストラリア発祥の言葉です。 A greenie in Strine is someone with a strong conviction for protecting or restoring the natural environment. It can be used somewhat derogatorily, especially as Australia is a fairly conservative country. Greenie can also be used to describe someone with a strong sense of social justice, regardless of their views on the environment. Greenie is now used globally in English, but the term originated in Australia.     豪キャブラリー：Yobbo

    Yobboは、厳密に言えばオージー英語のみではなく、イギリス英語でも使われている言葉けれでも、オージー英語独特な使い方があるから豪キャブラリーに当てはめれると考えRooが判定した。 　オージー英語のyobboは品が悪くて教養のない男の人を示す軽蔑用語でありながら、反社会的な行動がよくyobbish, yobbo-likeと言われているので特定な人に使わない限りどこでも使える言葉。 　Yobboは死語になりつつある。今のオーストラリアではboganが主流となっている。今が似ているけど、女性にも当てはまる上にbogan独特な文化が出来上がっているので、豪社会ではboganがバカにされながら完全に市民権を得ている。 　ちなみに、イギリス英語のyobboは同上の意味がある上に暴力行為を振る人に対して使う。オージー英語のyobboは必ず暴力を振るという感覚がない。 　Yobboの由来はboyを逆にしてyobとなり、それを伸ばしたような感じだ。

    hooroo Australian English A quaint way of saying goodbye. Sometimes, “toodleoo,” is used instead. This is especially through the names of creatures such as the kangaroo, koala, wombat, wallaby and dingo, all of which were originally Indigenous Australian words, but now used everywhere English is spoken, as well as being incorporated into other languages, including Japanese. 　オーストラリア原住民の言語は、世界的にも貢献している。カンガルー、コアラ、ウォンバットやディンゴなどの動物の名前は全て先住民語に由来し、現在は英語だけでなく日本語を含め世界各国で使われており、まさに「国際語」だ。
