豪のクリスマス・ソング:Deck the Shed

XmasKanga 今日のオーストラリア風のクリスマス・ソングが1996年、バッコ&チャンプスというコメディアンコンビが砕けて出した曲「デック・ザ・シェッド」だ。
 曲のタイトルは「小屋を飾ろう」というふうに直訳するし、「ひらぎかざろう」とかけている。
 歌詞では、飾りとして使うのが飾り物よりアカシアなどのオーストアリア特有なものだ。
 1990年代半ば頃からバッコ&チャンプスことグレグ・チャンピオン氏とコリン・ビュキャノン氏が2回に渡って伝統的なクリスマス・ソングをオーストラリア風の替え歌を作ってアルバムを出した。
 今、すっかりとオーストラリアのクリスマス伝統となっていると言っても過言ではないと思う。

     米・英語で普通に使っている言葉がオージー英語になるといきなり意味がまったく違ってくることがたまにある。Feralという言葉がそう。どのように違うのかは続けて読めば分かる。 Meanings of words can change suddenly when moving from English spoken in other countries to Strine. Let’s see what happens with feral.

     オーストラリアニューサウスウェールズ州全体が干ばつ状態と州政府が宣告した。  非常事態となっている。  干ばつそのもの記録的に悪い。  農業などが苦しんでいる。  家畜をはじめ、動物続々と飢えている。  そのうち、ニューサウスウェールズ州西部には立ったままのカンガルーの骸骨が見つけられた。  まるでゾンビ・カンガルーに見えている。  国政府が地球温暖化に消極的な姿勢を示しているので、農家に助成金を大量にばらまいてものの、環境対策が不十分と批判の声が多い。

    Fossickは古くから使われている独特なオージー英語であり、珍しく今でもよく使われている言葉だ。意味は、あっちこっちにものを探すことだ。由来はオーストラリアの19世紀での発展に大きく貢献したゴールド・ラッシュである。当時、金を探す人たちはfossickerと呼ばれ、その後金以外どんなものでも探すのがfossickするということになったようだが未だに鉱業に全く縁がない考えRooでも最初に思い浮かぶのが「金を探る」のが不思議でしょうがない。
