Cozzie

Racist job ad sparks anger Eastlands Shopping Center Coles Supermarkets

Whinge

What Happened When Australia And Japan Met At The Olympics?

Sports Day is coming up, so it’s a good time to think that when Australia and Japan began celebrating 50 years of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation in 2026, there was an obvious place to look for the story of their relationship: the Olympic Games. The two countries have met at Olympics in Melbourne, Tokyo, Sapporo, Nagano and Sydney, and will meet again when Brisbane hosts the Games in 2032. But the interesting stories are not really about medal tables. They are about swimmers who became rivals, athletes who became Japanese favourites, schoolchildren who adopted an Australian team, students who stayed connected across the pandemic, and even a…

Stinking?

Why Do The Wealthy Smell In Strine? Riches, in Australian slang, don’t just glitter; they smell. Call someone “stinking rich” and everyone instantly knows exactly how wealthy you mean. “Stinking rich” means extremely, excessively wealthy — so much money it’s almost distasteful. The phrase isn’t unique to Australia; it’s common across British and American English too. But Australians lean on it heavily in stories about old pastoral fortunes — the squatters and wool barons whose sheep runs made them wealthy almost overnight. Example “He struck it lucky on the goldfields and ended up stinking rich.”

Paddle Pops: The Icy Treat Aussies Gave To The World

Every Aussie childhood summer has the same soundtrack: the clink of the servo freezer door and a kid asking for “a Paddle Pop.” But this icy treat didn’t come from a factory boardroom — it came from an engineer who turned down NASA. A Paddle Pop is a flavoured ice-block (popsicle) on a flat wooden stick, originally created by Sydney’s Streets Ice Cream in 1953. The name has become so common in Australia that “Paddle Pop” is often used generically for any similar icy-pole, much like “Esky” is used for any cooler box. Paddle Pops are, per capita, the world’s best-selling ice cream. …

  • Why Do Aussies Say “Fair Enough”?

“Fair enough.” You’ll hear Australians say it dozens of times a day. Someone explains why they’re late. “Missed the train.” “Fair enough.” Someone says they’re too tired to go out. “Fair enough.” It isn’t enthusiastic agreement. It isn’t even saying the other person is right. It’s simply a friendly way of saying: “I understand.”“That seems reasonable.” Australians like avoiding unnecessary arguments. Rather than debating every little point, “fair enough” acknowledges the other person’s explanation and lets the conversation move on. Unlike the more Australian expression fair dinkum, which questions honesty or sincerity, fair enough simply accepts what has been said. Vocabulary ExpressionFair enough Pronunciation/feə(r) ɪˈnʌf/ MeaningI understand. That…
