Ukiyo-e Meets The Aussie Bush

How Japanese Ukiyo-e Helped Margaret Preston Paint Australia

How do you create an artistic identity for a country without simply copying Europe? For Australian modernist Margaret Preston (1875–1963), part of the answer lay in Japan.

Born in Adelaide, Preston studied art in Australia before travelling extensively through Britain and Europe. There she encountered modern artistic movements and developed a lasting interest in Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Returning to Sydney in 1919, she set out to develop a distinctly Australian visual language.

Ukiyo-e offered her a fresh way to see the world. Rather than relying on conventional Western perspective, Japanese prints often use flattened space, strong areas of colour and strikingly cropped compositions. Preston adapted these principles to woodblock prints of Australian native flowers, birds and Sydney Harbour. The result was a bold, modern vision of Australia in which local subjects were treated with the graphic confidence of Japanese printmaking.

A major retrospective at Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) now traces this remarkable career through more than 200 paintings, prints, sculptures and archival materials. Visitors can explore the artist’s experiments with colour and composition, including the woodblock prints that became central to her reputation. The exhibition also examines the more complicated side of Preston’s legacy: her use of First Nations visual traditions. By placing historical works alongside contemporary First Nations artists, the NGV invites visitors to consider questions of cultural appropriation and the ways Australia’s national identity has been constructed.

For anyone interested in the artistic connections between Japan and Australia, this is an opportunity to discover how an art form born in Japan helped transform the way an Australian artist depicted her own country.

Own Your Own Japanese Castle for $100,000

Aussies can buy an (almost) authentic Japanese castle for only about $100,000, it has been revealed recently on social media. Century21 Japan is selling the 6-story castle (with a restaurant on the second floor) in Akabira, Hokkaido, at a price unimaginable to potential home buyers Down Under. Of course, at that price, there’s bound to be a few catches, but perhaps not as many as some may think, especially considering it comes with a huge garden (over 5,000 m2), a working elevator, restaurant, more than 40 parking spaces and connection to sewage and water mains. Located in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island and home to the cashed-up bogan paradise of Niseko,…

Monkeying Around With Shared Kobe Steel(e)s

Of the many commonalities shared by Australia and Japan, perhaps one of the quirkier ones is that both countries are home to a Kobe Steele known for monkeying around. Australia’s Kobe Steele founded the Orangutan Foundation International Australia (OFI Australia), and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2021 for her services to conservation and the environment. Japan’s Kobe Steel Ltd., meanwhile, monkeyed around in a far less noble way, falsifying inspection and quality data on steel, aluminium and copper products for years, affecting hundreds of customers and resulting in billions of yen in fines after causing one of Japan’s most significant industrial quality scandals in recent…

Strine

     オージー英語はStrine(ストライン)とも言う。

Welcoming The New Aussie Plants To The Garden After I Said There’d Be No More

After promising myself that I would not further complicate the garden already lacking space for any new members when visiting (Numanoue Nouen)  yesterday, I spent today planting the bunch of additions that I invariably picked up. We bought a bottle tree at the popup shop at Urawa PARCO, and then ended up buying basically a forest full of trees when we went to the nursery itself in the afternoon. I’ve long found the best way to deal with temptation is not to resist it, so I woke this morning expecting a delivery, probably in the early afternoon given that we had not made the order until the afternoon and…

Why Are Australian Gum Trees All Over Japan?

Look around many Japanese parks, university campuses or botanical gardens and you’ll probably spot a gum tree. Most people walk past without a second thought. Yet these unmistakably Australian trees have quietly become part of Japan’s landscape. An Aussie Arrives in Japan Eucalypts are native almost exclusively to Australia. The first specimens arrived in Japan during the late 19th century, when the country was eagerly introducing plants from around the world for scientific study and forestry trials. Botanical gardens played an important role in testing which species could adapt to Japan’s climate. More Than One Tree Many people think “gum tree” means…
