It’s A Long Way To The Shop If Ya Wanna Sausage Roll

There’s probably not an Aussie schoolkid who has never sung the words, “It’s a long way to the shop if ya wanna sausage roll,” a derivative of lyrics from Acca Dacca‘s 1976 hit “Long Way To The Top.” I get to live out that lyric today, getting on my bike and heading along the Tama River on a 50 kilometer-plus journey in 35 degree heat to get stuck into an absolutely scrumptious homemade sausage roll from Punk Doily. 1976年に出たAC/DC(アッカ・ダッカ)の名曲「Long Way to the Top」の替え歌だね。 Punk Doily, a friend of the kangaeroo.com site because of its role in boosting Japan-Australia relations, is an Aussie cake and cake shop in…

Did You Know A Japanese Cure Turned Out To Be A QR Aussies Use Daily?

Aussies scan QR codes countless times every day—for café menus, concert tickets, parking and payments. Yet few realise the technology was invented in Japan by one engineer who wanted to make work easier. Meet the man behind the square In 1994, Japanese engineer Masahiro Hara developed the QR code while working for Denso Wave. The company needed a faster way to track vehicle components during manufacturing. How Does An Aussie Garden Give Time To Paws?

One of the highlights of our Aussie garden in suburban Tokyo over the years has been kangaroo paws, except for this year. We initially planted a couple, but in the darker corner of the garden, and after the first couple of years one died and the other was sickly and did not bloom. We’ve achieved much greater success planting from seed. In fact, our kangaroo paws did so well we could give plants to most of the neighbors, as well as friends and colleagues. This year, though, only two of about 12 different kangaroo paws have bloomed (though my next-door neighbor’s have flourished!). July can be…

Why Did Aussies Fall in Love with Japan’s Akiya?

Lots of Aussies first discovered Japan through “Japow!,” its powdered snow. Now, many are discovering something even more unexpected—its empty country homes. From Niseko to Hakuba and beyond, Aussies are helping breathe new life into communities facing population decline. Real Estate Romance Started with the Snow The real estate romance relationship began in the 1990s when Aussie skiers discovered the deep powder snow of Hokkaido. How Did A 19th Century Kangaroo Spark Japan-Australia Ties That Now Seem A Perfect Match?

Long before Australia became one of Japan’s closest partners, Japanese manufacturers had been using kangaroos to promote their products. The earliest documented reference to the commercial use of a kangaroo in Japan came from 1884, when a misemono traveling curiosity show advertised that it would feature a fukuro nezumi, literally a pouch mouse, at the Tenmangu Shrine grounds in Osaka. A Kangaroo on a Matchbox Japan first enacted a trademark registration system in June 1885, and Kobe-based match manufacturer Seisuisha registered its first trademark on Oct. 11 of that year. How’d Ya Shape An Aussie Garden In Suburban Tokyo?

Alex Endo, arguably Japan’s preeminent designer of Aussie gardens, carried out a remarkable transformation of our block in suburban Tokyo. He planned several months in advance over the winter. When the spring came around, he had a selection of Australian native plants ready to go into the block. How It Started Among the trees he planted in our back yard were a callistemon, a couple of species of grevillea, some myrtles and a banksia.
