南オーストラリア州セドゥナという町では、同町の海産物関係の伝統の象徴としてオーストラリアの「Big Things」ひとつであるデカイかきのBig Oysterがある。 セドゥナは元々捕鯨用の拠点として１９世紀で出来た町だったが、この数十年ではかき業が盛んとなり、1991年かきを称えるオイスターフェストという祭りを開催する。 コンクリート製のBig Oysterは元々同祭り用の山車のために作られたが4回その任務を果たして町の中に永遠提示するようになった。 セドゥナは砂漠であるナラボア平原の境界にあるので、東から西へ行くと最後の町であり、逆方向で行ってれば平原の終わりのシンボルとなるところのだ。 Ceduna Oyster Festival 2009 from CAAMA on Vimeo. 大きな地図で見る

今、オーストラリアは真夏に向かっているので、町の中では多くのオージーがthong姿を見せてくれるようになる。しかし、それを他の英語圏の人に言ったら、彼らは顔を赤らめるだろう。何でだろう？オーストラリアでのThong姿は、全然恥ずかしくないのに。 It’s approaching midsummer in Australia and many Aussies would now be getting about in thongs. Tell that to someone from another English-speaking country and they may assume it would be a time for red faces. Why thongs? And why so embarrassing?

Koshigaya, located some 30 kilometers from downtown Tokyo, and Campbelltown, which is situated about 50 kilometers from Sydney’s central business district, were almost made for each other, even if only serving as satellite cities for their respective countries’ largest cities. Koshigaya and Campbelltown are sister cities and it’s hard to see a better example of the custom than the relationship between the Japanese bed town and its Aussie sibling. Koshigaya is also home to a picturesque corner of Australia, complete with wallabies, emus and some lovely wild birds, including rainbow lorikeets, superb parrots, Major Mitchell’s cockatoos, tawny frogmouths and kookaburras. 「Back of Bourke」って、いったいどこにある？
実は、地図にはありません。 オーストラリア人が “He lives out the back of Bourke.” と言ったら、本当に Bourke の裏側に住んでいるわけではありません。 Back of Bourke は、 「ものすごく遠い田舎」「とんでもない辺境」 を意味する慣用表現です。 ニューサウスウェールズ州の町 Bourke は、19世紀には開拓地の最前線でした。 そのため、「Bourke のさらに向こう側」と言えば、文明から遠く離れたアウトバックを意味するようになったのです。 現在でも、 “It’s out the back of Bourke.” と言えば、 「めちゃくちゃ遠い場所」 という意味で通じます。 Strine 表現 Back of Bourke 意味 非常に辺鄙な場所。 例文 Their farm is out the back of Bourke. 「彼らの農場はものすごく辺鄙な場所にある。」 日本とのつながり 日本なら「秘境」や「山奥」のような感覚ですが、オーストラリアではスケールが違います。 何百キロも町がないことも珍しくありません。 オーストラリアでは、「遠い」の基準そのものが、日本とはまったく違います。
