なぜDog’s Balls(ドッグズ・ボールズ)はBarking Madにさせる?

オーストラリア人はなぜこんな表現を使うの?

最初にお断りしておきます。

品のいい表現ではありません。

でも、オーストラリアでは意外によく耳にします。

Dog’s balls は、

「ものすごく分かりやすい」
「誰が見ても明らか」

という意味の俗語です。

由来は……そのままです。

犬を見れば、雄か雌かは一目瞭然。

そこから、

“It’s as obvious as dog’s balls.”

という表現が生まれました。

意味は、

「そんなの見れば分かるでしょ。」

というニュアンスです。

要注意:激似イギリス英語のDog’s bollocksと勘違いしないでくださいね。Dog’s bollocksの由来が全く同じですが、それが「最高!」「これ以上良いものない」ような意味であり、ストラインのdog’s ballsとかなり意味合いがずれています。

意味

非常に明白であること。

  • Aussieが「Wanker!」と言ったら要注意!

    Why Is Calling Someone A “Wanker” So Offensive? Roo-dness Scale: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5) ⚠️ この言葉はかなり失礼です。親しい友達同士の冗談として使われることもありますが、知らない相手には絶対に使わないようにしましょう。 バーで聞こえてきた一言 メルボルンのパブでクリケット中継を見ていたときのこと。審判の判定に納得できなかった男性が、テレビに向かって叫びました。“You bloody wanker!” Example Don’t be such a wanker. 「そんなバカなことするなよ。」 また、 That bloke’s a complete wanker.

Why Is A Strine Sponger Not A Good Pickup? どんな職場にも、どんなシェアハウスにも、必ずいる。誰かの分まで飲み食いして、 自分の分は絶対に払わない人。オーストラリア人はその人を”sponger”(スポンジャー) と呼ぶ。 Every workplace, every share house, every family gathering has one: the person who never quite pays their share, never quite pulls their weight, and always seems to be there right when the food comes out. Aussies have a word for them: sponger. Meaning A sponger is someone who lives off other people’s generosity–money, food, a couch to crash on –without ever giving anything back. The image is a kitchen sponge: soaking everything up, contributing nothing. spongerとは、お金でも食べ物でも寝床でも、他人の親切に頼って生きているのに、 何一つお返しをしない人のこと。台所のスポンジのように、すべてを吸い込むだけで 何も生み出さない、というイメージから来ている。 Example “Don’t invite Dave to the barbie. Let’s Barbie! Aussie-Style BBQing for the Japanese!

Australia beef is the most visibly successful Australian export to Japan, leaving considerable distance to its closest rivals, which these days are probably Tim Tams, Miranda Kerr and hordes of drunken ocker snow bunnies in country towns like Niseko and Hakuba. To be honest, Oz doesn’t really enter the consciousness of most Japanese, except for Aussie Beef, which is probably the first thing that comes to mind for many Nihonjin when asked about Oz. And this year, Meat & Livestock Australia Ltd (MLA) is going all-out to try and convert Japanese consumers to worshiping the barbie in much the same manner that many Aussies do. MLA is conducting a huge…

  • 豪キャブラリー:Rockmelons

Rockmelons can be a bit of a trap for young players, because it’s a Strine saying for a fruit found pretty much all over the world. Note the distinctive orange texture of the rockmelon flesh. This distinguishes it from the cantaloupe Europeans eat, musk melon preferred by the Japanese and Americans and spansek found in southern Africa. All these fruits are bloody nice wherever you eat them, but the only fair dinkum rockmelons are in Australia, so that’s what makes it a 豪キャブラリー term.

Read this in Plain English/プレーン英語で読む Read this in Japanese/日本語で読む Chrissie It was getting close to Chrissie, which prompted me to chuck a sickie. I was still in the nuddy, so I slipped on some grundies. I went to light up a durry, but I’d run out and had to have a rollie. It was perfect weather and I wondered if the blokes from out Woop-Woop would be into having a barbie and lairing it up with me in Brizzie, the Big Smoke.
