Australia Wants You…Again! Another Embassy Opening

The Australian Embassy in Tokyo is advertising another position. This time, it’s looking for a Consular and Passports Officer to deliver essential services that support the wellbeing and safety of Aussie citizens abroad.

Like last week’s posting for a Strategic Communications Assistant, this job would be an awesome chance for someone to contribute to building better relations between Australia and Japan.

I’ve met lots of Embassy folks and they’re a very decent bunch of people blessed to have the wonderful job of serving Australia’s interests in Japan.

    サッカーＷ杯最終予選：いよいよ日豪ガチンコ対決！

    　いよいよ１２日オーストラリアのブリスベーン市にてオーストラリア代表と日本代表がサッカー・ワールド・カップ最終予選のガッチンコ対決が行う。 　今まで日本とオーストラリアが１９６８年から始まり１８試合のＡマッチが行い、いずれも６勝６敗６引き分けとまさにマッチしている相手だ。しかし、点数になると日本が２５ゴールを取ったに対してオーストラリアが日豪戦で２３回しか相手のネットに入れていない。また、現時点のＦＩＦＡランキングでは日本がオーストラリアを抜いてアジア１位となっている。 　重要な対決も差がなかなかつけない。２０１１年アジア・カップ決勝戦では日本がロスタイムで優勝が決まり２００７年のアジア・カップ準々決勝でも日本が勝利を収めたが、２００６年のワールド・カップはオーストラリアが３－１で日本を破り、１９９４年のキリン・カップでアウェー・ゴールで豪が日本とフランスを相手に優勝した。（以下のビデオハイライトを参照） 　今回の試合ではフォームで見る限り日本が有利としか言えない。香川、永友、本多をはじめ、ヨーロッパの有力チーム選手が多く、平均年齢が３０歳を超えるオーストラリアに比べて若さのエネルギーが発揮できるチャンスではないか。 　そして、今回の最終予選日本がオマーン・ジョールダン。また、最初の２試合がホームでプレーし、オーストラリアへ行ったら季節が反対にも関わらず熱帯雨林地に近いブリスベーンでは気温や気候が日本とそれほど変わりなく、時差もそれほどではないので最高条件が全部そろっている。 　一方、ホームとは言えオーストラリアにとって条件が悪い。先週オマーンでアウェーでの０－０引き分けが約４０℃で行い、３０歳を超える８人のスターティング・メンバーにとってキツイ。中近東からオーストアリアの東海岸に飛行機を乗らなくては行けないのも厳しく日本代表の上に疲労とも相手にしなければならない。でも、たとえ条件が悪くても日本人選手の質が今回はるかにオーストラリアを越えている。 　オーストラリアで試合が行うにしても、考えRooはアウェーの日本が２点差をつけて勝だと予想する。 FIFA Australia vs Japan Head-to-Head Statistics Football Federation Australia Japan Football Association

    Australia’s ‘Voice’ So Close Yet So Far To Japan

    豪州の“ザ・ヴォイス”、日本ではあと一歩届かず John Farnham is probably the most successful solo male singer Australia has ever produced.     Bugger me, Bob! 豪州元首相の豪俗語が外交的な事件になりかけた頃

    オーストラリア元総理大臣であったボッブ・ホーク氏は、最近日本から勲章を受けたが、1980年代初来日したオージー英語によっての時激ヤバ「事件」になりかけたこと、と豪州オンライン・ニュースサイトnews.com.auが今週報道した。 今週勲一等旭日大綬章を受章した同氏は、1983年から1991年の間豪首相であり、その間4回も日本を訪問した。 　労働組合出身のホーク氏が1回目来日した時当時有名だったオーストラリアの過激的な組合活動について聞かれた。ホーク氏の返事は「騙されんぞ」だった。しかし、当然日本語ではなくオージー英語でその答えを出した。それは「They won’t play funny buggers」という表現だった。 　問題はbuggersという言葉だ。オージー英語及びイギリス英語ではbuggerが「やつ」とか「野郎」などの意味がある。しかし、もう一つの意味は英語圏諸国が中心となるコモンロー下の犯罪buggeryを起こす者の意味もある。Buggery罪は、「肛門性交行為」のことだ。 　news.com.auによると、ホーク氏の「They won’t play funny buggers」が日本語に通訳された時にオージー英語訳の「騙されんぞ」や「変な振る舞いをする」ではなく本来米語の意味で「面白い男性同性愛者」と訳されたといい、在日オーストラリア大使館がまいていたという。 　この話は本当かどうか分からないが考えRoo.comのようなサイトを見ればこのようなオージー英語かストラインのミスがないだろう。
