    English is now Australia’s most commonly used language, but there are also still dozens of indigenous Australian languages that are native tongues for many people living Down Under. 　今では英語がオーストラリアで最も使われている言語であるが、同国では数十ある先住民言語の一つが母国語である人が多数いる。 And many indigenous Australian languages have for tens of thousands of years used sign language as well, the most famous example being that used in the Warlpiri language used in the remote central Australian desert, centering on the community of Yuendumu. 　面白いことに、この先住民言語の中、多くが何万年前から「手話」が使われている言語が多い。恐らくその最も有名な例がオーストラリア中央部砂漠地帯内イウエンドゥムで使われているワールピリ語だ。 Including the Warlpiri, these sign languages are often the result of taboo practices, where custom forbids certain members of tribes speaking to other members.     Boxing Dayって殴りあうカンガルーと関係ないの？

    　ボクシング・デーは１２月２６日にあり、クリスマスの翌日であり、オーストラリアをはじめ、イギリスも北欧数カ国では祝日となっているが、日本でもアメリカでもほとんど知られていない。 　ボクシング・デーがある国々の中でも「何でボクシングだろう？」と聞かれる。 　スポーツのボクシングかなと思えば、そうでもなく、実際にスポーツでも殴り合いでも全く関係ない。オーストラリアの象徴一つであるボクシング・カンガルー、残念。（ちなみに、ボクシングが実際にカンガルーにとって非常に残酷な行為であり、オーストラリア国内では今禁止されている。） 　実は、このボクシングの由来がボックス（箱）にある。 　元々クリスマスの翌日で、教会が貧しい人たちのために寄付を募ったクリスマスプレゼントのボックスを開ける日であったことから”Boxing Day”と呼ばれるそうだ。 　オーストラリアでは、真夏のボクシング・デーが商業的でもスポーツ的でもお祭りの日のようだ。 　書くとしては「ボクシング・デー・セール」でバーげーン・セールが盛り上がり、一年のうちの一日売り上げが最も多い日だ。 　そして、ネット上で「Cyberボクシング・デー・セール」も行い、消費税課税が免除される海外小売に抵抗するためオーストラリア国内小売業が開催するイベントだ。 　また、スポーツがすごい。夏季国民的なスポーツであるクリケットの最も重要な一日と言えているボクシング・デー・テスト・マッチが毎年メルボルンで（5日間の試合）初日が行なう。その日、9万から10万人の観客が観賞する場合がある。 　なお、シドニーからタスマニア島州都であるホバートの間のヨット・レースが開始日となるのもボクシング・デーだ。 さらにボクシング・デーについてはこちらへ。

    豪のクリスマス・ソング：Six White Boomers

    オーストラリア風のクリスマス・ソングの中では「Six White Boomers」が伝説的な存在となっているかもしれない。 　理由が多数ある。 　まずは、1960年にリリースされたので恐らく初めて広く知られたオーストラリア風のクリスマス・ソング。 　そして、歌ったのはロルフ・ハリス氏という多彩なパフォーマーだった。今でも82歳にもなっている同氏がイギリスでは「典型的なオージー」を思い浮かばせるだろう。 　同氏がオーストラリア・イギリスを始め、広く・深く・長く愛されている。歌だけでなく、絵も上等、話術も最高だし、漫画もすぐる手入るし、少年時代では水泳チャンピオンだったハリス氏。 　この曲はサンタがオーストラリアにやってきた時にはトナカイの代わりにカンガルーの力でゾリを動かしたという話だ。 　曲にでるブーマーは「熟成している雄カンガルー」という意味だ。 SIX WHITE BOOMERS Early on one Christmas Day, a Joey Kanga-roo, Was far from home and lost in a great big zoo.
