Cold, Wet and Dark

Doesn’t get any more archetypically Monday than today….cold, wet, dark and bleak.

Kangaeroo wasn’t too keen on getting out on the bike with a huge day ahead.

But it was precisely because the day promises to be demanding that dragged him out in the end.

Rain had been forecast, but the prediction was that it would be intermittent and not heavy.

That was exactly what happened.

Rather than hit the dark bike path where many people dress in black and are hard to see at the clearest of times, Kangaeroo decided to stay on the main roads, which were hard enough to navigate in the dark and wet.

Couple of big meetings today, potentially life-changing, and a reunion tonight with old workmates.

Worried sick about the dinosaur: she is due to lay, but producing nothing and sticking to the bottom of her cage. No chance to take her to a vet today, so praying for the best. Will keep an eye peeled, though.

  • Stunning Start

The 2025 new year has kicked off in a maginificent manner. We have had unseasonable warmth and the return of once customary brilliant winter sunshine. I started off with a flurry of enthusiasm, too. My year started with an extremely early rise not long after 4 a.m. I quickly showered and got on my bike. Even though I weighed myself for the first time in many months, and didn’t like what I saw, I was still feeling keen. Once my mind started turning over, it was already too late to turn my back, and I was on my way to Tokyo Tower for an in-person AA meeting to launch the…

  • Tour de Kagoshima-Kyoto Day 4: Kurokawa to Beppu

Glorious weather greeted the tour today, paving the way for some amazing riding. The group set out from the gloriously quaint hot spring resort town of Kurokawa. Slowly but surely, the riders wound their way through forested areas, driving ever upward until reaching the Kuju ski ground, the highest point of the entire tour at 1,140 meters above sea level. Despite reaching the tour’s literal high point, it wasn’t all downhill from there. Travels along undulating roads followed over the next 30 or so kilometers along beautiful thoroughfares such as the Yamanami Kaido. The group inched ever downward, though, until reaching the hot spring town of Yufuin. Following a delicious…

  • Lady of the Lake and More Lucky Rides

Not much has happened, certainly nothing to really write about, but I have been very fortunate to get some amazing skies that make tremendous backdrops for bicycle photos, including these shots of La Cangura beside a little pond near the Tama River, which evoked an image of the Lady of the Lake from the Arthurian legend (at least for me). Futile attempts to revive the fertilizer-burned lawn have caused greater frustration. And so has taking care of the bird, which is going through a hormonal stage. Of course, my boss at work is somewhat similar, so I never know which person I am going to have to deal with on…

  • And Now, The End is Near

It began to sink in on this morning’s ride along the Tama River that this aspect of my life, such a crucial activity over the years of the covid pandemic, is drawing to a close. Many people are fixtures along the river, just as I suppose I must be for them. Over the years we have become familiar and share greetings, as well as inspiration, and sometimes even the occasional conversation and, dare I say it, friendship. Next week, I begin a new job and will commute into central Tokyo once again. My commute will, unfortunately, be by train, and not by bicycle as it was for many years with…

  • Bested by Busyness

Little things in life have kept me scrambling and stumbling in such a way it’s hard to get much else done. Work is always much busier in the warmer months. This year has been particularly demanding as our tyrant boss drove more staff out of the door and their tasks were often imposed on me. Early morning starts have been the norm and I’m often exhausted by the time the sun sets. Health hasn’t been great and the teeth I neglected for decades have come back to haunt me with a vengeance, which will result in two more of them being pulled out later this week. My garden is a…

Big Red Dinosaur Loader Gets A Free Bath

Tokyo turned on the best weather of the year so far today, and the Big Red Dinosaur Loader celebrated with a free bath, albeit an unintentional one. Big Red fell into the drink when I propped it up on the waterside to take a photo under the gloriously azure skies that perfectly matched its hue. Built for rough stuff, the bike was perfectly fine, and it actually turned into a much-needed wash. It was another day to slide in a second ride, which I was quite fortunate to do. I knew today was going to be demanding, as I had meetings scheduled for nearly the entire day. These are aimed…
