Flashes of Brilliance, but Lacking Focus

Today’s title was a perfect summation of the photos I took on my morning ride, but could also describe my life to a tee.

The skies were spectacular! My photography, not quite so. I am struggling to hold my phone still. My hands shake all the time.

I got a late start as I communicated with my (retired) psychotherapist sister about how to deal with my current situation.

I’m trying to avoid dealing with my emotions and reality.

But I am going to have to face both, as the only solution lies within myself.

And that was going through my mind as I rode off.

Now I have to head to the dentist for an onerous couple of hours.

Cop A Gander At These Rippers Too...

  • Samurai Stoicism

Stoicism is a much-valued attribute in Japan, where many regard it as a carryover from the days of feudal samurai, whose code of Bushido discouraged them from expressing great emotion. My experience in decades of living here is that many people have great perseverance, and the ability of so many to cope with natural and other disasters has filled me with empathy and admiration. But I had always been dismissive of the claims of stoicism, citing the exaggerated use of bandages, crutches and other medical paraphernalia for apparently minor injuries, or the outrageous lengths people go to coping with the rain, including umbrellas, rain shoes and heavy duty wet-weather gear….

  • Seeding is Believing!

For me, no flower better symbolizes Australian native plants than a banksia, and even though they have a reputation for being relatively easy to grow and maintain, that hasn’t been my experience in my two years of having an Aussie garden, but I’ve finally got a seed of hope….literally! Banksia seeds I planted in growth pods a couple of months ago and had basically given up on because they appeared unresponsive have started to sprout. Only two seedlings have appeared, but it was unexpected and a great delight. I tried growing heath banksia from seed last year and only one sprouted, but it was lost almost immediately upon moving it…

A successful tour of Australia accompanied the hit, including a show in the Adelaide suburb of Glenelg as an alcohol-fueled riot that led to 66 arrests broke out. It was only the second Top 20 hit by…

…ah, so* have a Winfield: The Tiny Tale Of Aussie Durries In Japan

A long, long time ago, in a Straya far, far away, Australia briefly exported cigarettes to Japan. It wasn’t that long ago, actually. But for several months in 1994, Winfield cigarettes, one of Australia’s most famous brands (it marketed itself as “Australia’s No. 1 brand” in Japan, but it was actually only the second-biggest seller Down Under, behind Peter Jackson), was an unlikely competitor of mostly British and American Big Tobacco companies to tap into what was still then a thriving Japanese smokers’ market largely unregulated at the time.Winfield was on a downturn at the time in its home country.Cigarette advertising had been banned from TV and print media decades earlier, but…
