Cyclepath!

Though my enthusiasm has waned over the past few years due to various factors, I’m a committed-enough cyclist to be worthy of the name, cyclepath.

And cycle paths are where you’ll find me in the pre-dawn (or early dawn) hours of most weekdays.

Every morning I rise at 4 (by which time it’s already light in Tokyo at this time of the year), pour myself into increasingly tighter lycra and get out on my bike.

I get out before I start thinking.

Once I start thinking, I will talk myself out of riding.

I’m basically not an exerciser, and am by nature a sloth.

So it doesn’t take much to keep me off the bike.

Claude the koala eats thousands of nursery seedlings intended for NSW wildlife corridor (英語)

Yowie Chocolate Australian Yowie Research Cryptomundo – Tales of the Yowie Yowie File Animal Planet TV crew capture audio they believe proves existence of yowies

People who Bend Bananas

Australian English accents don’t really have regional differences. Somebody in Perth in the far southwest will sound reasonably similar to someone from Townsville in the far northeast, over 6,000 kilometers away. Considering the area involved – Australia is 26 times bigger than Japan – it’s amazing.

  • Holmes, Sweet Holmes

With Valentine’s Day focusing a spotlight on love (or at least a love of chocolate in Japan) and having gone to a movie theater to see a film for the first time in decades over the weekend, I got to thinking, which can often be a dangerous thing. Growing up when I did, I became accustomed to barriers breaking down as the conservatism of the 1950s gave way to the counterculture of the 1960s and moved onto the freewheeling 1970s. It was natural for me to see society become more progressive and permissive, as well as more diverse and inclusive, and I assumed that would continue to be the case…

  • Propagation Station

Even though it’s the middle of winter, I’ve turned my attention to trying to conjure up some pretty plants by propagating cuttings from the star of Kangaeroo Corner, our grevillea. I set up a propagation station using cuttings from our tree. I’ve dipped the cuttings in growing hormone and hope they will sprout roots after a few monnths in the solution stored on the station. We started the garden in 2022, at which time I had no idea or interest in gardening. I didn’t know what a grevillea was. But ours has me smitten. This winter, it has remained in constant bloom, unabated since April of last year, and with…
