豪文化に独特な貢献した鞭打ちを称えるビッグ・ストックホイップ

　現代オーストラリアの文化には「鞭打ち」が独特な役割を果たした、と豪鞭打ち境界がいう。
　その貢献を称えるため、オーストラリア北部にあるノーザン・テリトリー州首都ダーウィンより車で約1時間離れているヌーナマー町に「ビッグ・ストックヒップ」が2003年に作られ、オーストラリアの「Big Things」を仲間入りした。
　高さ約８メートルの「ビッグ・ストックヒップ」はエコ牧場を経営するミック・デニガン氏に作られてた。ストックホイップ（家畜用の鞭）は農業大国であるオーストラリアに欠かせない存在となり、大きく貢献したはずだ。以下のビデオで見られるようにデニガン氏自身がかなりユニークな方であり、牧場経営の上に手作りで年間約３万の鞭を作ったり、歌も歌ったり、自由な時間にワニ狩人だという。

    Southern Crust: Japanese Snapper-Baker Not Loafing Around To Make Dough From Bread Down Under

    Photographer and baker Kazuaki Ono has combined his dual talents to create the Southern Crust exhibition at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan in Marunouchi until Oct. 31.     元祖Big Bananaが豪のBig Things原点だ

    　オーストラリアの「Big Things」現象は、1964年ニューサウスウェールズ州北部のコッフス・ハーバーにあるビッグ・バナナで始まった。 　同町が熱帯地にあり、ビッグ・パイナップル同様に熱帯地果物産地だ。が、1960年代に入ると格安の輸入品に対しての競争力低下などがあり、綺麗な海岸や海を生かせて観光地として生まれ変わろうとした。その結果がなんとビッグ・バナナだった。 　元祖ビッグ・バナナは長さ13メートルと高さ5メートルである。中に入り、近くにバナナ農園かお土産屋や乗り物及びウォータースライダーがあり、立派な観光地となっている。その他、まねするビッグ・バナナが他の地域にもできた（別途で後日お話しするね！）。 View Larger Map Big Banana Official Website

    泥酔Big Kangarooが人々を歓迎するようになった

    カンガルーはオーストラリアそのもののシンボルでありながら考えRoo.comの象徴でもあるため、今回の「Big Things」は南オーストラリア州のビッグ・カンガルーを紹介したいと思う。 　ビッグ・カンガルーは南オーストラリア州と西オーストラリア州の境界村であるボーダー・ビレッジに設置され、高さ5メートルもあり缶を片手に持っている。オーストラリアが1987年にアメリカス・カップのヨット・レースを開催する前にボーダーの町おこしの一環として1986年に作られた。 　珍しく、ビッグ・カンガルーもニックネームがあり、ルーイ２世だという。ルーイ１世は、元々手に持った缶がビール缶だったため、村に対して与える印象が酔っ払いと近すぎるじゃないか、という恐れがあった。そのため、作り変えてジュースの缶に変えたとともに新しい名前も与えられた。 大きな地図で見る
