After 37 years!
The feeling of joy is indescribable.
Sheer, utter, unadulterated bliss does not do the feeling justice. Ecstasy doesn’t come close.
Decades of disappointment, anger, despair, longing, envy, mistakes, yearning, praying, desperation were all lifted in a handful of minutes and shared with hundreds of thousands.
Commiserations to the Adelaide Crows. What a fabulous team the Crows are. Like the Tigers, their time will come. Hopefully after the Tigers have established a couple of dynasties and become the team most hated by other teams again.

    Going Out To Lunch With Godzilla

    I’m fortunate enough to work within a short stroll from Godzilla, the (sometime) scourge of Japan and frequent destroyer of Tokyo. I took advantage of my lunch break to head down to visit Japan’s most famous monster. Of course, it’s not the real Godzilla, otherwise I probably wouldn’t get much work done. It’s a statue of the monster located in front of headquarters of Toho Co., Ltd., the movie studio that gave the world Godzilla. I also got to look at a quaint little garden filled with Aussie plants.   • Trekking Up Takao

    For the last day of the 2023 new year’s break, Kangaeroo and Co. headed up to the delightful Mount Takao in Hachioji. Leaving late in the morning, a short trip by bus and train had us at the foot of the mountain. A healthy walk of little over an hour had Kangaeroo at the peak. Normally, Mount Takao affords an amazing view of Mount Fuji. But this time, the clouds that frequently cover the iconic Japanese mountain won the day, but the view was still magnificent.     Cozzieは典型的なオージー英語であり、典型的なオーストラリアのものでもある。多くの人にとってオーストラリア人の印象はライフセーバーである。そして、そのライフセーバーの制服と言うべきものがcozzieだ。そうだ！Cozzieは水着のことだ。死語のswimming costume「泳ぐ服装」のオージー英語らしい省略言葉だ。 　島大陸のオーストラリアは世界有数の水泳大国でもあり、有名なSpeedo水着はオーストラリア生まれだ。長年Speedo社は自社製水着をGreat Aussie Cozzieという語呂合わせしたコピーを使っていた。 　水泳大国らしくオージー英語では「水着」という意味の語彙が豊富であり、cozzie以外にswimwear, bathers, trunks, togsなどもある。

    Boxing Dayって殴りあうカンガルーと関係ないの？

    　ボクシング・デーは１２月２６日にあり、クリスマスの翌日であり、オーストラリアをはじめ、イギリスも北欧数カ国では祝日となっているが、日本でもアメリカでもほとんど知られていない。 　ボクシング・デーがある国々の中でも「何でボクシングだろう？」と聞かれる。 　スポーツのボクシングかなと思えば、そうでもなく、実際にスポーツでも殴り合いでも全く関係ない。オーストラリアの象徴一つであるボクシング・カンガルー、残念。（ちなみに、ボクシングが実際にカンガルーにとって非常に残酷な行為であり、オーストラリア国内では今禁止されている。） 　実は、このボクシングの由来がボックス（箱）にある。 　元々クリスマスの翌日で、教会が貧しい人たちのために寄付を募ったクリスマスプレゼントのボックスを開ける日であったことから”Boxing Day”と呼ばれるそうだ。 　オーストラリアでは、真夏のボクシング・デーが商業的でもスポーツ的でもお祭りの日のようだ。 　書くとしては「ボクシング・デー・セール」でバーげーン・セールが盛り上がり、一年のうちの一日売り上げが最も多い日だ。 　そして、ネット上で「Cyberボクシング・デー・セール」も行い、消費税課税が免除される海外小売に抵抗するためオーストラリア国内小売業が開催するイベントだ。 　また、スポーツがすごい。夏季国民的なスポーツであるクリケットの最も重要な一日と言えているボクシング・デー・テスト・マッチが毎年メルボルンで（5日間の試合）初日が行なう。その日、9万から10万人の観客が観賞する場合がある。 　なお、シドニーからタスマニア島州都であるホバートの間のヨット・レースが開始日となるのもボクシング・デーだ。 さらにボクシング・デーについてはこちらへ。
