In Strine, your crust is your livelihood, or what you do for a living. For example, “Davo works hard to earn his crust.”

Alky is the Strine term used to describe an alcoholic. Back in the olden days, this would have been quite an acceptable term, but nowadays, someone with an alcohol dependence would probably be described as having substance abuse disorder.

Abo is an archaic and derogatory word for indigenous Australians, deriving from the equally obsolete aboriginal. This is a deeply offensive word and shouldn’t be used, but it is. So we provide it here for educational purposes.
Australia’s ABC is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the taxpayer-funded national broadcast network. The ABC is also referred to as Aunty, a nickname mimicking that bestowed on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The ABC was heavily influenced by the BBC in its formative years, and the networks retain close ties.
Kangaeroo.com originally started as a bit of a joke site focused on Strine–the word to describe Australian English that is a play on the word “Australian” as pronounced in a broad Aussie accent. Given that this site started with the intent of spreading information about Japan and Australia and matters related to these countries, including languages, and then how much focus I have placed on gardening over the past couple of years, it’s surprising that I haven’t had much to say about bonsai. Or bonzer, for that matter….
