Cycle of Life

Life looks like it’s gonna be pretty busy for the next few weeks, so it might be something of a last chance to post for a while, and fortunately I got to kick off this period with a ride along the Tama River this morning.

It’s been a funny rainy season so far; it’s onset delayed by weeks and the consistent rain I expect has been replaced by heavy rains punctuated by long periods of sunshine and heat. The garden loves it!

    豪のクリスマス・ソング:Aussie Jingle Bells

AUSTRALIAN JINGLE BELLS Dashing through the bush, in a rusty Holden Ute, Kicking up the dust, esky in the boot, Kelpie by my side, singing Christmas songs, It’s Summer time and I am in my singlet, shorts and thongs Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way, Christmas in Australia on a scorching summers day, Hey! Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is beaut! Oh what fun it is to ride in a rusty Holden Ute. Engine’s getting hot; we dodge the kangaroos, The swaggie climbs aboard, he is welcome too. All the family’s there, sitting by the pool, Christmas Day the Aussie…

  • Do Little

Blessed with a bit of time and being in close proximity, I used the beautiful weather to visit Tama Zoological Park, testing a new Nikon Z 50 camera. I first visited this zoo in 1993, at a time when the memory of the 1984 arrival of koalas was still fresh. Koalas were flavor of the month in Japan at the time, literally so in the case of Koala no March–a confectionary that remains popular to this day–and the zoo’s Australian Habitat was something of a showcase area. Now, it’s just one of many habitats in what is a delightful little zoo nestled into the Tama hills. KOALA-IFIED TO SELL Though…

  • No Time to Paws

Work is dominating my life at the moment and I have little time for anything else, yet we are fortunate that our kangaroo paws are leading the way in a thriving summer garden. I’ve detailed my attempts at growing Australian plants from seed. While most failed, the kangaroo paw, the ones I really wanted most to survive, are flourishing now. I’ve even managed to give away a few to neighbors, which was really awesome! I hope to be able to spread the joy even further. All this is even better as I thought that I had killed my original kangaroo paw last year, but one of them remained alive! And…

  • Nicking Off To Nikko

With Mrs. Kangaeroo celebrating another trip around the sun, we headed off Nikko to celebrate. Nikko is home to Toshogu Shrine, where the remains of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate that ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868. Mrs. Kangaeroo had never visited despite the shrine being a typical destination for Japanese school trips. I wasn’t keen, as Nikko is one of Japan’s prime tourist destinations, and I wasn’t looking forward to being surrounded by the hordes of vsitors that has most of the country moaning about “overtourism.” But Mrs. Kangaeroo loves celebrating her birthday, so I shut my mouth and determined to make it a fun time for…

  • Should’ve Been Astuter With Astuto

Someone stole my Astuto bike and I’m feeling pretty lousy about it. The bike was special because a lot of people showed me kindness and generousity so I could build it up from scratch. I should have kept her inside the house, but we simply don’t have the room. I thought she was covered by insurance, too, but it turns out not to be the case because the bike was not taken from inside the home. Apart from the benevolence I received, the bike also promised to help me rejoin the cycling community. I was once an avid and highly active cyclist, but over the past few years, arthritis has…

  • Castle In The Air

From Atami, we backtracked only the old Tokaido route to the castle town of Odawara. We were delighted to be presented by a garden full of flowers again, this time the hydrangea and shobu, both plants that bloom around now when the rainy season hits. Mrs. Kanageroo had never climbed the keep of the castle, so we headed upstairs through the concrete recreation of the once crucial fortress in feudal times and enjoyed the glorious view it gave of the once strategic city. Greater things awaited, though, so we didn’t linger for long, but were there for just enough time for Mrs. Kangaeroo to get an unexpected horse ride.
